Get to know Rheumatologist Dr. Mirela Dumitrescu, who serves patients in Connecticut.

Dr. Dumitrescu, an accomplished rheumatologist, specializes in the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases and systemic autoimmune conditions that can affect the bones, muscles, or bones. Currently, she is affiliated with Yale-New Haven Health – Bridgeport Hospital and Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center – Trumbull, which is a part of Northeast Medical Group. 

With nearly three decades of experience in her field, some of the conditions that she treats include antiphospholipid antibodies, arthritis, bone densitometry, bursitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, connective tissue disease, dermatomyositis, diagnostic arthroscopic lavage, gout, infusion therapy, lupus, lyme disease, neck disorders, neck pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, rheumatic fever, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, tendonitis, and vasculitis.

Following the completion of her medical degree from the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania, Dr. Dumitrescu performed her internship at the Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy. After relocating to the United States, she completed her residency in internal medicine at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, New York, followed by her fellowship in rheumatology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, the doctor is board-certified in rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Rheumatology is a branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic diseases. Physicians who have undergone formal training in rheumatology are called rheumatologists. Rheumatologists treat arthritis, autoimmune diseases, pain disorders affecting joints, and osteoporosis. There are more than 200 types of these diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, back pain, osteoporosis, and tendinitis.

Among her numerous accolades, Dr. Dumitrescu is the recipient of Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2014), On-Time Doctor Award (2015), and Patients’ Choice Award (2015, 2016).

On a more personal note, she speaks several languages, including English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Spanish.
