What happens if you get a cavity with Invisalign?
If you have a cavity you need to go to your general dentist to have it taken care of before it gets bigger. Tell your dentist that you are being treated with Invisalign and they can either make sure that your new filling is contoured so that your trays will fit or if the filling turns out to be larger than expected your orthodontist will need to do a new Invisalign scan and they will need to do a refinement for you. How do you prevent cavities while having braces?
Hello! It is very easy to prevent cavities and decalcification (white spot lesions) from occurring during braces as long as you follow a few simple rules. Brush your teeth at least 3 times a day with a fluoride toothpaste. When you brush, please remember to brush the portion of the tooth below the braces as well as the portion of your teeth above the braces near the gums. Many patients do not like to brush above the braces and near the gums because it sometimes hurts. If you do not brush above the brace, your gums can become extremely swollen and they may bleed a lot. If this happens, you must gently brush them a few times a day to get rid of the swelling. When you brush them your gums will bleed. This is a good thing because it is helping to rid the swelling. In addition, you should use floss threaders to floss, proxy brushes to get under the wires and a mouthwash to rid even more bacteria. If you begin to get decalcification, you can ask your orthodontist to prescribe you Prevident, a toothpaste with extra fluoride to help with this. Good luck, and keep your teeth clean, they are yours for the rest of your life! READ MORE

How to recover from getting braces?
Hello, Unfortunately, there is a period of time, approximately 7-10 days, in which new braces are uncomfortable. The best way to deal with sore teeth are Tylenol as needed and a soft diet. Pasta, mashed potatoes, soup are all great choices. Also, ice cream, smoothies, milk shakes are all fabulous because the cold makes sore teeth feel better. After this adjustment period things should get much better and it will be worth it in the end when your child has a fabulous smile. Hang in there! READ MORE
Will my orthodontist know that I haven't worn my retainer for a week?
Hello, If you have truly not worn the retainer for just one week, then probably not a lot has happened. However, unfortunately, teeth move and continue to move for the rest of your life no matter how good your orthodontic treatment was. We recommend retainers be worn full time for approximately 9 months to a year so that all the cells and tissues and fibers that you don't think about can get used to their new positions and then at night time for life time! If retainers are being worn properly, they will be somewhat loose when you go for your visit, if they are not being worn they will be tight and from this your orthodontist can tell how much you are wearing them. Can braces cause injury?
Hello, Thank you for your questions. I understand that you are very nervous about getting braces but rest assured the process is quite easy. Your orthodontist will not numb your mouth when you get your braces on there is absolutely no need for this. There is also no risk of any injury during the fitting process. Your orthodontist and the assistants will explain each part of the process in a lot of detail before they put on the braces. The process is relatively easy for patients you just need to it in the chair with your mouth open and the orthodontist will do the rest. There is no pain affiliated with placement however there will be some minor discomfort for a day or two after they are placed until you get used to them. This pain can be alleviated with Tylenol or whatever you would normally take for a headache and I always tell my patients to eat a lot of ice cream :) Anything cold makes sore teeth feel better. Good luck! You will be pleasantly surprised how easy this process is! You will soon be on your way to a beautiful smile! READ MORE
Could my daughter's braces cause her gums to swell?
Hello! Her braces are not causing her gums to swell. Unfortunately it is the way she is bruising her teeth and this is very common when kids first get braces. Kids tend to brush below the brace on the tooth very well but they forget to brush the gums and above the braces. This leads to some plack accumulation on the teeth and causes the gums to swell. It is an easy fix. Just remind her to brush the gums and above the braces. They may bleed a bit when she brushes and this is totally normal it’s just getting the irritation out. This should resolve within 7-10 days of better brushing! Good luck! READ MORE

I wear my retainer, so why are my teeth still shifting?
Good morning Unfortunately, your body and teeth are constantly changing and teeth have a tendency to move for the rest of your life. In my practice I recommend retainers are work 24/7 for the first year after braces are removed and then at night for life. If your teeth are still moving you should consult an orthodontist to see if the retainer you are wearing is stable enough. The other option to consider (once you speak with an orthodontist) is a permanent or fixed retainer glued on behind your teeth which will help to prevent tooth movement. READ MORE
