Revathi Shekar, BDS, MDS is a Board-certified Oral Medicine (Diplomate of the ABOM) specialist affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. She provides care to patients who have complex oral diseases, and lays emphasis on patient education, motivation and person-centered care.
Oral Medicine is the specialty of dentistry responsible for the oral health care of medically complex patients and for the diagnosis and management of medically-related diseases, disorders and conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region.
Dr. Shekar specializes in the diagnosis and management of:
- Oral mucosal diseases such as oral ulcerations, lichen planus, leukoplakia, pemphigoid and pemphigus.
- Salivary gland diseases including dry mouth and Sjögren syndrome.
- Neurologic and chemosensory impairment of the maxillofacial region including conditions such as burning mouth syndrome and atypical facial pain.
- Orofacial pain conditions including temporomandibular disorders and trigeminal neuralgia.
- Oral complications from cancer treatment such as mucositis, graft-versus-host disease and jaw osteonecrosis.
- Collaborative and comprehensive care in the management of:
- Oral side effects of cancer chemotherapy, radiation, HSCT ex. mucositis, GVHD
- Addressing active oral infections prior bone marrow transplant, organ transplant
Management strategies and procedures in Dr. Shekar’s repertoire:
- Biopsies of tissue specimen to obtain a diagnosis
- Ordering and Interpretation of imaging studies, salivary and blood tests, microbiological investigations
- Medical Management with topical and systemic medications to treat a wide range of conditions
- Specialized Injections in the mouth or face for diagnostic purposes/ for administration of medication for pain relief, anesthesia, or inflammation
