What is the difference between a child life specialist and a pediatrician?
A pediatrician is a medical doctor who specializes in the medical as well as psychological needs of a child or adolescent. A child life specialist has studied psychology in college and generally works in hospitals to deal with behavioral aspects of sick children and their specific needs in that situation. If you have concerns about the behavioral needs of your child, it is always better to speak with your pediatrician first and let them decide an appropriate referral. READ MORE
My daughter breathes through her mouth due to her adenoids problem. Is this okay?
It is common for children to breathe through their mouth when they are sick and their adenoids are swollen. If she always breathes through her mouth day and night, that can be a problem. Also, loud snoring and especially sleep apnea (where she stops breathing for a short period of time) is a more serious problem and needs to be addressed with an ear, nose, and throat specialist. You can try an over-the-counter allergy nose spray like Flonase or Nasocort when she is mouth-breathing and see if that helps. As she gets older, her adenoids may start to get smaller. READ MORE
Can a UTI affect small kids?
Yes, children can definitely get UTIs. Burning with urination can be a sign of UTI or sometimes could just be local irritation around the urethra. Things like bubble baths or not wiping well after going to the bathroom can cause irritation. Usually, your pediatrician can tell the difference by checking a urine sample and examining the area. Blood in the urine is a sign of UTI, but you may not be able to see it. Blood may be in such small amounts that it only shows up when tested. READ MORE
