Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Sandra L. Gadson, who serves patients in Merrillville, Indiana.

Dr. Gadson is a practicing, fellowship-trained nephrologist specializing in kidney health and the renal system. Her areas of medical interest include critical care, diabetes, hemodialysis, kidney biopsy, kidney stone disease, and lupus.

Currently, she is a part of the team of professionals at Nephrology Associates of Northern Illinois/Indiana (NANI), seeing patients at the office in Merrillville, Indiana. It is the largest nephrology practice in the United States.

“We have over 120 kidney specialists in 3 states and are nationally known. In addition to our growing network of medical offices and dialysis centers, NANI has expanded to include other services our patients might need. Diagnostic labs and high blood pressure specialty centers are within reach. Peritoneal home dialysis is offered by our providers with dedicated PD nurses on staff to train and support patients. We care for patients before and after their kidney transplants with the expertise of transplant specialists. NANI doctors are always on the forefront of new treatments and cures, supported by NANI Research, a clinical trials arm of the practice.  Interventional nephrologists are trained at our centers so we can coordinate the best care for our patients from office visits to outpatient vascular access procedures to dialysis care. Back in 1976, Dr. Gadson graduated with her medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. Upon graduation, she went on to perform her internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. This was followed by a fellowship in nephrology at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Subsequent to her education, the doctor attained board certification in internal medicine and nephrology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

In order to stay up to date in her field, Dr. Gadson remains an active member of the American College of Physicians.

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care when the time comes.
