Dr. Witherell is a board-certified interventional pain management physician providing advanced interventional treatment of adult spine related pain at SpineCare Delaware and FirstStateSpine in Newark, Delaware. Dr. Witherell formed Interventional Spine Pain Consultants dba SpineCare Delaware in 2003 alongside his colleague, Dr. James Downing. Moreover, he is affiliated with the Delaware Outpatient Center for Surgery.
Dr. Witherell earned his medical degree in 1991 from the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, formerly known as Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. Following an internship in internal medicine conducted at Prom Christiana Healthcare (1992), he completed the anesthesiology residency program at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (1995). He advanced his training with a fellowship in pain medicine, which he performed with the same teaching venue in 1996.
Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certifications in both anesthesiology and in pain medicine through the American Board of Anesthesiology. The American Board of Anesthesiology sets standards and exams for the accreditation of Board certified anesthesiologists coming to the end of their residency. It is one of the 24 medical specialty boards that constitutes the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Prior to his current endeavors, Dr. Witherell was the director of the Christiana Care Pain Center. An avid lecturer and published author on pain management topics, he is a member of the International Spine Intervention Society and American Society of Interventional Spine Physicians. He is currently licensed to practice medicine in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
