Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Gallagher became interested in pain management as a result of her experience as a first responder on 9/11. Seeing firefighters and police officers being wheeled into the trauma unit at St. Vincent’s Hospital, she knew that pain would linger long after their wounds healed.

Pursuing a career in medicine, she earned her medical degree from the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University in 2007. Thereafter, she trained at some of the top medical institutions in the country, including an internship in internal medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine / Montefiore Medical Center; a residency in physical medicine & rehabilitation at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital; and the Weill Cornell Tri-Institute Pain Fellowship within the Department of Anesthesiology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

Among her various accolades, she is the recipient of the Falcon Award for Patient Care and the Physician of the Year Award by NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia, the Fellow of the Year Award by NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital, Cornell, the On-Time Doctor Award (2016, 2017, 2018), the Patients’ Choice Award (2016, 2017, 2018), and Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2016, 2017, 2018).

Interventional pain management or interventional pain medicine is a medical subspecialty which treats pain with invasive interventions such as facet joint injections, nerve blocks (interrupting the flow of pain signals along specific nervous system pathways), neuroaugmentation (including spinal cord stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation), vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, nucleoplasty, endoscopic discectomy, and implantable drug delivery systems. Interventional pain medicine physicians may be able to figure out and treat the cause of a patient’s pain, and direct them for the right treatment options after determining the most likely pain generators.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Gallagher is an avid runner and enjoys traveling and photography. She is fluent in both English and Spanish.
