An experienced dermatopathologist, Dr. Bussian is affiliated with Skin Pathology Associates, LLC in Birmingham, Alabama. Skin Pathology Associates was established in 1995 as a privately-owned group of board-certified dermatopathologists serving clinicians in the Southeast and beyond. Their expertise includes a comprehensive array of disciplines within dermatopathology, including inflammatory diseases, alopecia, cutaneous lymphomas, and neoplasms. Their physicians are dedicated to providing exceptional services to healthcare providers throughout the country, and therefore, truly become a valuable extension of their referring physicians’ team.
A native of Florence, Alabama, Dr. Bussian graduated summa cum laude with a degree in biology from Vanderbilt University in 1991. She was president of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and graduated cum laude from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1995.
After a year and a half of residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), she transferred to anatomic pathology, serving as Chief Resident in 1999-2000. From there she went to Duke University for her fellowship in dermatopathology and became board-certified in 2001. She was an Assistant Professor in the department of pathology for one year at UAB, where she practiced dermatopathology and gynecologic pathology before joining Skin Pathology Associates in 2002, where she has been happily practicing since.
Professionally, Dr. Bussian is an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the Women’s Dermatology Society, the College of American Pathologists, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, among others. She is also a past President of the Alabama Dermatology Society.
Dermatopathology is a joint subspecialty of dermatology and pathology or surgical pathology that focuses on the study of cutaneous diseases at a microscopic and molecular level. It also encompasses analyses of the potential causes of skin diseases at a basic level. A dermatopathologist is a highly trained physician who specializes in diagnosing disorders of the skin under a microscope.
