Get to know Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr. Jana I. Preis, who serves patients in Forest Hills, New York.

Dr. Preis is a dual board-certified, fellowship-trained infectious disease specialist at the Infectious Disease Center of Queens in Forest Hills, New York. 

Her areas of expertise cover all areas of infectious disease, including treatment and prevention of infections in immunocompromised patients, such as patients with a history of malignancies, primary and secondary immunodeficiency, pre- and post-transplant recipients, and HIV.

“As an infectious disease specialist, I pursue a ‘Sherlock Holmes’ approach to diagnosis and treatment. A key aspect is thorough, detailed patient history. I add diagnostic connections with a physical exam, test results, and reports from other professionals to find answers and to develop a plan to treat the whole patient. I involve patients actively during medical care and value their input.”

In regards to her educational background, Dr. Preis graduated with her Medical Degree from Ross University School of Medicine. Subsequently, she completed her residency at Maimonides Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in infectious disease and epidemiology at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Holding dual board certifications in internal medicine and infectious disease, Dr. Preis is recognized as a Diplomate by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Actively involved in clinical research and academic medical education, Dr. Preis serves as an attending physician at White Plains Hospital, assumes the role of Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Epidemiology at Brooklyn VA Medical Center, and holds the position of Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at SUNY Downstate School of Medicine. Additionally, she serves as Chief of the Infectious Disease Division at the New York Harbor VA BK Campus and as a VISN2 ID ICC Lead.

Among her professional affiliations, Dr. Preis maintains active membership in the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the New York Academy of Medicine.

Infectious disease is a medical specialty dealing with prevention, the diagnosis, and treatment of infections. Infectious disease specialists provide long-term care to people with diseases that are lifelong or last for more than one year. They employ a variety of antimicrobial agents to help treat infections.

With a wealth of experience and a dynamic career, Dr. Preis serves on the editorial boards of numerous infectious disease journals, authored several book chapters, and actively participates in speaking engagements at the local, national and international conferences. In addition, she possesses over ten years of experience in medical media and journalism as a founder and host of cable TV and radio medical news shows.  

On a personal note, Dr. Preis enjoys traveling, listening to classical music, and impressionist art; and describes her family as “happy and loud.”
