Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Anthony S. Alvarado, who serves patients in Sacramento, California.
Dr. Alvarado is a fellowship-trained nephrologist whose focus is on autoimmune renal diseases, glomerulonephritis, and dialysis. In 2020, he joined the Department of Nephrology at Sacramento Medical Center.
Providing exceptional nephrology care, the doctor’s philosophy of patient care is to empower his patients by educating them about their kidney disease to be able to make decisions together.
Born in Michigan and raised in Peru, Dr. Alvarado obtained his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of San Martin de Porres in 2005. Upon relocating to the United States, he completed his residency in internal medicine at Mercy Health – The Jewish Hospital in 2011, followed by his fellowship in nephrology at The Ohio State University Hospital in 2013.
He then completed a fellowship in lupus, vasculitis, and glomerulonephritis, and stayed as faculty and Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. After 6 years in academia, he moved to California to join a private practice in the Coachella Valley.
A member and contributor of the American Society of Nephrology, Dr. Alvarado is board-certified in both internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care when the time comes.
On a more personal note, Dr. Alvarado resides with his family in Sacramento. They enjoy traveling, attending cooking classes, and taking advantage of the incredible outdoor activities that California offers.
