Get to know Physiatrist Dr. Jeffrey M. Cohen, who serves patients in New York, New York.

An experienced specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, Dr. Cohen is the Medical Director of Medically Complex Rehabilitation at Rusk Rehabilitation at NYU Langone Medical Center.

He is an expert in rehabilitation for persons with neurological disorders, spinal cord injuries, and musculoskeletal conditions, as well as for people who have had a limb amputated. He always aims to understand the whole person rather than just the person’s condition.

“I am fortunate to have close relationships with my patients, and I follow up with them over long periods of time. This aspect of treatment is integral to our team at Rusk Rehabilitation—we’re always ready and available to consult and heal. In addition to providing rehabilitation care, I am involved in research studies aimed at improving outcomes for people who’ve had a limb removed. These research studies have been supported by grants from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research and the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association” stated Dr. Cohen.

Honored to be able to share his treatment philosophies and approach to patient care with residents and medical students, he serves as a Clinical Professor within the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. His teaching efforts were recognized in both 2014 and 2017 when the graduating class of the Rusk Rehabilitation residency program honored him with a Best Teacher Award.

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in 1986. He then went on to complete his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at NYU Medical Center in 1990, and his fellowship in Electromyography and Neuromuscular Diseases at the said establishment in 1991.

“I was a competitive swimmer growing up. In college, I used my love of swimming to help others by volunteering at a swimming therapy program for people with disabilities. This was my first experience with rehabilitation and ultimately led me to where I am today” expressed Dr. Cohen.

Specializing in the rehabilitation of persons with limb loss, he is board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPMR). He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The mission of the ABPMR is to serve the public by improving the quality of patient care in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This is accomplished through a process of certification and maintenance of certification that fosters excellence and encourages continuous learning.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, also known as Physiatry, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities.
