  • How long is the healing period of a torn ACL?

Sorry to hear this. He will likely need an ACL reconstruction surgery in order to return to sport. The wounds heal in 2 weeks and the graft heals in 2-3 months. Patients are jogging by month 3, running by month 4 and engaging in a return to sport progression program after 6 months. Full unrestricted return to sport can take as long as one year after surgery. • How is the recovery for ACL tear surgery?

The surgical solution for an ACL tear is usually an ACL reconstruction. Almost all patients go home on the same day in a brace and with crutches. The brace and crutches are discontinued between 4-6 weeks based on recovery. Pain meds are usually discontinued by day 5. PT starts after 3-5 days and continues for at least 6 months. You can expect to be jogging by month 4, running by month 5, and starting a sports progression program by month 6. Danyal H. Nawabi, MD READ MORE

  • How soon do you see a physical therapist after tearing your ACL?

I would recommend he sees a PT tomorrow or Monday, i.e., within 5 days of injury. The goals are to regain motion (both flexion and extension), maintain quadriceps muscle strength and reduce swelling. Make an appointment to see an orthopedic surgeon for clinical evaluation as soon as possible. Danyal H. Nawabi, MD READ MORE
