A cardiac surgeon opens the chest and performs heart surgery, whereas a cardiologist specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the cardiovascular system. The cardiologist will carry out tests and they may perform some procedures, such as heart catheterization, angioplasty or pacemaker insertion. Dr. Murphy also holds a position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toledo Medical Center, which allows her to train the next generation of doctors with the most up-to-date procedures. She is able to show students the most effective ways to treat patients, which helps further her contributions to the field.
