About

Dr. Amy Offutt is the medical director and co-owner of Heart & Soul Integrative Health and Yoga, located in Marble Falls, Texas, and Burnet, Texas, which she co-founded with her husband, Brad, in 2007. She completed medical school at The University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio in 1997 and completed a residency in Family Medicine at Christus Health in 2,000. She has subsequently completed an advanced fellowship with A4M and has a Master’s Degree in Integrative Medicine from George Washington University. She has passed board exams for both.

Dr. Offutt’s first seven years of practice were focused on rural family medicine and obstetrics after which she transitioned to approach the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases using Integrative Medicine. This transition became necessary after she noticed the infringement of healthcare administrative overreach interfering with her patient-physician relationships and a strong trend toward poly-pharmacy in medicine. She saw that the healthcare environment in which she was practicing was pushing for more patients to be seen in less time resulting in quicker treatment, usually by adding a prescription to the patient’s list.

She believes that many diseases have a deeper cause than what is typically considered in a routine medical visit, and her compassion for patients and life-long learning desires have prompted her to work to evaluate patients for these deeper causes. She offers an extensive evaluation, and a partnership approach with patients, with a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s health history, clinical presentation, and personal goals. She works with each patient to personalize a plan to optimize health and reduce suffering. With this approach, she sees primarily complex patients in her practice where she has a wonderful team of other clinicians and support staff.

Dr. Offutt volunteers her time with ILADS, a non-profit medical society dedicated to educating medical providers and promoting research in the field of complex inflammatory diseases. She also volunteers her time on the PANS Advisory Council for the state of Texas after being appointed by Governor Greg Abbott. These volunteer roles help her to expand the legacy she hopes to leave which is a greater network of physicians and other clinicians to care more effectively for the long-suffering, who are so often under-recognized and under-treated. She also enjoys partnering with those who desire optimal health using an Integrative Medicine approach. Her goal is to help each person she sees to have as much vitality as possible.

On a more personal note, Dr. Offutt has been married since August 1990 to Bradley Offutt, with three children Colby (2001) Dylan (2003), and Halley (2008). She is also a certified yoga instructor. Dr. Offutt enjoys yoga, being outdoors, cooking, gardening, and traveling.

  • Can pregnant women go to the gym?

Absolutely, pregnant women can go to the gym. However, hopefully a woman has a consistent and well constructed exercise regimen PRIOR to pregnancy that she can continue. I would not recommend starting to lift weights, for example, during pregnancy. Light weights (such that there is no "bearing down") would probably be fine, but heavy weight lifting would not be a good idea. Walking is great, swimming is great, continuing most pre-pregnancy exercises for which there is already conditioning are the best approaches to staying fit and moving well while pregnant, in my opinion. • Is dust allergy serious?

Dust allergies are common, and symptoms are mild for most people. I find that almost all allergic conditions improve significantly when we eat real food, eliminate refined sugar, processed foods, fast food, oils other than butter/ghee/coconut/high quality olive oil/limited avocado oil. Dairy is an exacerbating food in some select patients. Teach her to do nasal rinses as those are quite practical and preventative for avoiding progressively worsening allergies and be aware that many over the counter allergy products do have side effects. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • What to avoid when trying to get pregnant?

Think of your body as an incubator. The healthier the incubator, the more likely that the pregnancy will be healthy (as well as the better the fertility potential). Great nutrition, movement, hydration, keeping stress in check, great sleep - these are some of the main lifestyle factors that create a healthy body to be able to have a healthy pregnancy. I would avoid as many activities as possible that do not align with these goals. READ MORE

  • What causes an aggressive child?

Aggression in children has a variety of possible causes. Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome is a possibility. You can look at the diagnostic criteria on the Stanford University PANS website. Children also go through phases of aggression for psychosocial reasons. I have found The Five Love Languages of Children book to be quite helpful in several cases where children seemed to be developing a defiant attitude. Other possibilities include nutritional causes (too much sugar can create ups and downs in mood, even an hour or two after a meal), sleep issues (inadequate or non-restorative sleep can cause daytime fatigue and irritability), peer influences (including some social media sources), pain (have you asked her if she is hurting any where?), and finally, some type of medical condition that would require more historical and clinical information to diagnose. I wish you well in sorting this out, and hope she gets some relief from some of these negative feelings. READ MORE

Dr. Offutt, an extensively trained integrative medicine physician, is the Co-Owner & Medical Director of Heart & Soul Integrative Health & Yoga in Marble Falls, Texas. She treats patients with complex health issues using a wide array of individualized strategies for healing.

Cherishing her relationships with her patients, she approaches her care viewing each patient as a whole person. Her goal is to partner with patients to empower them to regain vitality, strength, mental clarity, energy, purpose, and a desire to share their gifts with others.

Back in the early days of her academic career, Dr. Offutt graduated with her medical degree from UT Health San Antonio School of Medicine in 1997. She then went on to perform her residency in family medicine at CHRISTUS Health/Santa Rosa from 1997 until 2000.

Recently, she was appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to the Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome Advisory Council. In addition, she serves on the Board of Directors for the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS).

It was her desire to better understand and care for patients that were experiencing chronic inflammation, often caused by underlying infections, that led Dr. Offutt to make the shift into integrative medicine. This path led her to ILADS, where she found an abundance of educational resources along with experienced practitioners to help further her knowledge and better serve her patients.

“One of my dreams would be to just keep building a bigger and bigger network. So being a member of ILADS is one way that we can build those networks together where, if we’re all on the same team or on the same page we can work together to help patients” expressed Dr. Offutt.

Family medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. A family physician is often the first person a patient sees when seeking healthcare services.
