My mother in law feels very sleepy all through the day. Can acupuncture help her?
Without knowing too much about your mother-in-law's case, I would say, yes, it is very possible that acupuncture can help with her condition and quality of life. If her condition is chronic, her acupuncture treatments may need to be ongoing with maintenance type care, but I would need to know more specifics about her condition before advising on the duration of a treatment plan. I feel very sleepy after my acupuncture session. Is this normal?
It is normal to feel very tired after an acupuncture session and happens to a lot of people. There could be a couple of different reasons why. The most common reason is that acupuncture stimulates the "rest and digest" part of your nervous system. When that part of your nervous system is active, your body goes into "healing mode" which is a very relaxed and restful state. This can make you very sleepy during and after treatment. The other common reason you would feel tired after a treatment is if your body is already run down and "deficient". When you get acupuncture it draws on your energy stores to get your body to heal. If you are already low on energy then you will feel the draw even more, again, making you sleepy after treatment. If I were you I would have a conversation with your acupuncturist so they can determine why this is happening and if they need to adjust their treatment strategy a bit. I find some of my patients can handle a more aggressive treatment and some need a lesser approach. Communication is key to figuring this out. READ MORE
Can an acupuncturist help me with my sleep disorder?
The simple answer to this question is yes, acupuncture can help with sleep issues. Your case is a little more complicated, however, since your sleep cycle is so disrupted. The best way to solve that would be to stop disrupting it which might not be an option for you since its work related. Because of this acupuncture would be a good option to help you to get better quality sleep when you are able to sleep. It can also help to balance out your sleep cycle quicker if you are switching between day and night shifts. READ MORE
How does acupuncture treat indigestion?
Acupuncture is great at treating indigestion. Your acupuncturist will take a detailed history of the condition to understand what is causing the indigestion and determine the best course of treatment. The treatments are always individualized, not just to each patient, but also tweaked and tailored for the patient at every appointment. So, however your husband's condition is presenting, the treatment will always meet him where he’s at and balance the body out so it can work more efficiently and effectively. Essentially, all we are doing is speaking to the body in its own language to get the body to heal itself. READ MORE

Is acupuncture a complementary treatment or does it treat ailments by itself?
What a great question! It all depends on what conditions are being treated. The beauty of acupuncture is that it can be used by itself for many conditions, but it is safe to use in conjunction with other treatments and medicine without interfering with the other treatments. It can actually compliment the other treatments and bring greater quality of life to the patient. A great example of this is someone using pharmaceutical medications and experiencing side effects can use acupuncture to treat their condition along with the side effects of the medication without interfering with the therapeutic effect of the medication.
