A graduate of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Dr. Garvin completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Southern California Medical Center. He then went on to complete his fellowships in cardiovascular disease and nuclear medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center and at Emory University Hospital.

A Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, he is board-certified in nuclear cardiology, cardiovascular disease, and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

A Fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians, Dr. Garvin is the founding member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. He is also a member of the Association of Black Cardiologists and the Society of Nuclear Medicine.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).

An eminent leader in his field, Dr. Garvin has presented and published research on the causes of electrocardiography, planar, clinical, nuclear, and cardiac imaging, first-pass radionuclide ventriculography, and coronary artery disease. He has also traveled to Kenya, India, Philippines, and Vietnam on a number of medical missions.
