Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Bala Thatigotla, who serves patients in New York.

Dr. Thatigotla is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in bariatric, advanced laparoscopic, and robotic surgeries. He is in practice with Trinity Medical, WNY, seeing patients at the offices in Cheektowaga and Lewiston, New York.

Some of the speciality procedures that he performs include: laparoscopic and robotic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, revision bariatric surgery, robotic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic and robotic paraesophageal hernias, laparoscopic/robotic Common bile duct procedures, laparoscopic and robotic colo-rectal procedures, interventional upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopies, minimally invasive general surgery, and more.

Holding an additional clinical role, Dr. Thatigotla serves as Chairman of Surgery at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, New York. He is also affiliated with Sisters of Charity Hospital, St. Joseph Campus.

In good standing with prestigious professional organizations, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS), and a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCS).

A graduate of Sri Venkateswara Medical College in Tirupati, India, Dr. Thatigotla completed post-graduate training in general surgery at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Following his residency in general surgery at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center in New York, he served a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery/bariatric surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Before long, he attained board certification in general surgery through the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. 

In practice for over two decades, the doctor’s research interests include metabolic surgery and robotics in general /GI surgery. He is also certified in Healthcare Quality Management through the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care. 

Among his most notable achievements, Dr. Thatigotla has been the recipient of Patients’ Choice Award (2011, 2020), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2014, 2020), and On-Time Doctor Award (2020).

On a more personal note, his favorite local restaurant is Hyderabad Biryani House. His favorite song is “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” He is fluent in English, Hindi, and Telugu.
