Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Jessica Laursen, who serves patients in California.
Dr. Laursen, a skilled ophthalmologist, sees patients within the Department of Ophthalmology at Kaiser Permanente in Vista, California. She also holds admitting privileges at Kp San Diego Medical Center & Kp Zion Medical Center.
“It is very important to me that my patients have as positive an experience in my clinic as possible. Children are very different from adults and often react to challenging situations in unexpected ways. My bachelor’s degree is in child development because even at an early age, I knew I would spend my life working with children. My team and I try to keep the mood light and use tactics that seem like games to my patients when I am actually performing my examination. Of course, not every exam will be easy but we are very capable of handling those situations as well!” as stated by the doctor.
Founded in 1945, Kaiser Permanente is recognized as one of America’s leading health care providers and not-for-profit health plans. It currently serves 12.4 million members in 8 states and the District of Columbia. The mission of Kaiser Permanente is “to provide high-quality, affordable health care services and to improve the health of our members and the communities we serve.”
Born and raised in San Diego, Dr. Laursen earned her medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. She completed her internship in internal medicine at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, her residency in ophthalmology at the Tulane University School of Medicine, and her fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA, under the leadership of many wonderful and world-renowned mentors.
Following her training, she became board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, whose mission is to serve the public by improving the quality of ophthalmic practice through a process of certification and Maintenance of Certification that fosters excellence and encourages continual learning.
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
Outside of the office, Dr. Laursen tries to take advantage of all that San Diego has to offer. She spends most of her off time with her siblings, five nephews, and teenage daughter. They hike, camp, go to the beach, go horseback riding, snowboard, and just have fun!
