Get to know Dr. Ken W. Lee, Cardiac Electrophysiologist who serves patients in Melbourne, Florida.

Dr. Lee is a highly-trained cardiac electrophysiologist who has been with the Health First Medical Group in Melbourne, Florida since 2018.  Prior to joining Health First, he was in clinical practice in central Ohio for almost a decade.

In his line of work, Dr. Lee treats abnormal heart rhythms, implants cardiac pacemakers (including the most cutting-edge leadless pacing systems) and implantable cardioverter defibrillators, as well as provides comprehensive electrophysiology studies, including tilt table testing, to help diagnose causes of fainting and palpitations.  He also performs ablation of a wide spectrum of cardiac arrhythmias and provides advanced device-related treatment for congestive heart failure.

Dr. Lee immigrated to the United States at the age of 9, and grew up in Boston, Massachusetts.

Pertaining to his educational background, he graduated class valedictorian at the Boston Latin School in 1989.  He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, after which he obtained his medical degree from the Joan & Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University in 1998.

Furthering his medical training, Dr. Lee performed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical Center (Minneapolis, MN), and his fellowship in Clinical Cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).  He then pursued a research fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology at the UCSF Cardiovascular Research Institute, after which he completed a fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at UCSF.  His research focused on animal and computer-based models of atrial fibrillation and investigated mechanisms of this highly complex arrhythmia.

Dr. Lee is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).  The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Dr. Lee is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Clinical cardiac electrophysiology (also referred to as cardiac electrophysiology, arrhythmia services, or electrophysiology), is a branch of the medical specialty of cardiology and is concerned with the study and treatment of heart rhythm disorders.  An electrophysiologist (or an “EP”) is a type of cardiologist.  They are “electricians” of the heart: they focus on the heart’s timing, or electrical system, and on diagnosing and treating irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias.  They are also qualified to perform special tests of the heart’s electrical system, such as an electrophysiology study, or an ablation procedure.

An active participant in clinical trials in the field of cardiac electrophysiology, Dr. Lee is the first physician to implant the FDA-approved, MRI-compatible permanent pacemaker in the Midwest. He has also authored multiple publications, including book chapters, abstracts, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
