  • Testosterone level?

Increasing evidence suggests that neurotransmitter Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is involved in the pathogenesis of ovulatory dysfunction through its central role in the hypothalamus. However, the peripheral role of GABA in ovulatory dysfunction has not been sufficiently investigated in spite of its existence in peripheral organs. First, the aim of this study is to investigate serum GABA level in ovulatory dysfunction patients. Second, to explore the correlation between serum GABA level with Body Mass Index (BMI), dyslipidemia, total testosterone and 25 (OH) vitamin D. Eighty ovulatory dysfunction patients and eighty age-matched healthy females were included in the study. All parameters were assessed calorimetrically or with ELISA. ovulatory dysfunction patients showed significantly decreased serum GABA level compared to controls (p < 0.001). There was a significant positive correlation between serum GABA and 25(OH) vitamin D levels (r = 0.26, p = 0.018), and a significant negative correlation with total testosterone (r = - 0.3, p = 0.02), total cholesterol (TC) (r = - 0.31, p = 0.01) and LDL-Cholesterol (LDL-C) (r = - 0.23, p = 0.045), respectively. The findings of this study suggest that disrupted GABA level in the peripheral circulation is an added contributing factor to ovulatory dysfunction manifestations. GABA deficiency was correlated with 25 (OH) vitamin D deficiency, dyslipidemia, and low total testosterone. Further investigations for GABA adjustment might supply a promising means for better management of ovulatory dysfunction symptoms. (Journal of Medical Biochemistry. 2019 Oct;38(4):512) READ MORE

He has been invited to lecture at scientific and medical meetings throughout the world and has played a key investigative role in numerous research projects in his field. He diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions relating to fertility, including assisted reproductive technologies (ART) involving the direct manipulation of eggs, sperm, and embryos for use in infertility treatment. Types of ART performed by Dr. Vasquez include sperm, egg and embryo freezing for fertility preservation, in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), assisted hatching (AH) of embryos, and embryo transfer (ET). Newer assisted reproductive technologies utilized by Dr. Vasquez include such powerful techniques as trophectoderm cell sampling, genomic hybridization,  preimplantation genetic screening (PGS), comprehensive chromosome screening (CCS) for chromosomal and genetic evaluation that allows the patient to choose normal blastocysts and avoid chromosomal anomalies (i.e., Down’s syndrome) as well as preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to preclude specific Mendelian genetic inheritance (i.e., Cystic Fibrosis, Alpha Thalassemia, Sickle Cell Disease). Additional successful ART technologies include mitochondrial DNA analysis to select viable blastocysts that are most likely to become a healthy live birth.

Some forms of ART are also used with regard to fertile couples for genetic reasons including single genomic sequencing and the option of gender selection to exclude X-linked recessive traits (i.e., Hemophilia A (Factor VIII deficiency) or B (Factor IX deficiency) or family balancing (controlled sex selection for family harmonizing gives parents more control of the composition of their family). ART is also used for couples who are discordant for certain communicable diseases; for example, HIV to reduce the risk of infection when a pregnancy is desired. Third Party Reproduction is the technology used to achieve pregnancy in procedures such as sperm or egg donation, embryo adoption and surrogacy. Dr. Vasquez is noted not only for his clinical excellence, but also for his compassionate and patient-centric attitude.
