Get to know Hospitalist Dr. Sarah Smiley, who serves patients in the Austin, Texas region.

Dr. Smiley is affiliated with Hospitalist Concepts Consulting, PLLC dba Internal Med Solutions (IMS), in Austin, Texas.

In 1991, she earned her degree from the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center / TCOM.   She completed her residency in internal medicine at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas, in 1994.

She is board certified in internal medicine and also in hospice & palliative medicine, both  through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization supported by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care.  She participates in ongoing maintenance of certification through the ABIM.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), Dr. Smiley is also an active member of the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, and the American College of Osteopathic Internists.  

Dr. Smiley is on staff at Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, Seton Medical Center Austin, Seton Medical Center Hays, Seton Northwest Hospital, St. Davids Medical Center and Rehab, St. Davids Surgical Hospital, St. Davids North Austin Medical Center and Rehab, St. Davids Round Rock Medical Center and Rehab, St. Davids South Austin Medical Center, Central Texas Rehabilitation Hospital, Arise Medical Center, Warm Springs Rehab Hospital, Northwest Hills Surgical Hospital, and The Hospital at Westlake and PAM Rehab Hospital.  

Hospital medicine is a medical specialty that exists as a branch of internal or family medicine, focusing on  the care of acutely ill and electively hospitalized patients. The primary focus may include direct patient care or co-management or patients, with other specialists. Hospitalists take an active role in patient care and work with other members of the care team, to try to provide the safest and best care possible in the hospital setting.  They also may be involved in hospital committee roles, given their expertise and collaboration with various interdisciplinary teams in the hospital.

Hospitalists typically do not follow patients in an office, after the patient leaves the inpatient setting. They may consult or attend at some postacute care facilities, such as skilled rehab, or inpatient rehab settings.
