Dr. Pitchumoni is a gastroenterologist, medical educator, and researcher with over 50 years of professional experience. He is a recognized expert in pancreatic disorders, and has done a great deal of research in the field of diabetes.
Dr. Pitchumoni is currently serving patients at Saint Peter’s Healthcare System in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He is the Chief of Gastroenterology at St. Peter’s University Hospital, which is a non-profit, 478-bed acute care teaching hospital sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen. Saint Peter’s brings the latest medical practices and highly skilled professionals to the bedside.
Dr. Pitchumoni is also the Emeritus Chairman and Director of Internal Medicine at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center. Furthermore, he is a Professor of Community and Preventive Medicine at New York Medical College, and has been teaching there since 1969. Prior to this, Dr. Pitchumoni had taught at Kottayam Medical College in his native country – India.
Dr. Pitchumoni is board-certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Growing up in India during the 1940’s, Dr. Pitchumoni was encouraged to go into medicine by his parents. He began on his career path at Trivandrum Medical College, where he graduated with a BChir in 1959. He then attained an MB in 1959 and completed his internship at Trivandrum from 1961 until 1963. Dr. Pitchumoni finally attained his MD from the University of Kerala Medical College in 1965. Two years later, he relocated to the United States to complete his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship training in gastroenterology at Norwalk Hospital.
For his distinguished service and achievements, Dr. Pitchumoni has been honored and recognized many times. He won the Physician Appreciation Award in 2018, and has also received the MDRF Lifetime Contribution Award, the P.N. Chuttani Award, and the Om Prakash Award from the Indian Society of Gastroenterology.
