About

I am a Board-certified Pulmonary and Critical Care physician scientist practicing in Boston, MA. I am active in outpatient and inpatient clinical care. Our team provides compassionate care for you and your loved ones. Good health is a life-long journey and our personalized patient experience can make your journey smoother. My research interests focus on the genetic epidemiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pulmonary hypertension. In addition to my clinical and research responsibilities, I help educate medical students and physicians-in-training in my respective fields of expertise.

Areas of research

COPD is one of the few major causes of death with an increasing mortality, and recently rose to become the third-ranked cause of death in the U.S. Smoking is the major risk factor for COPD, but susceptibility to cigarette smoking is highly variable. A substantial amount of this variability is due to genetic factors. My research has most recently been on the identification of the genetic determinants of emphysema distribution and the development of predictive models of COPD disease progression under the mentorship of Peter Castaldi, MD, MS and Edwin K. Silverman, MD, PhD.

Pulmonary hypertension remains a prevalent source of substantial morbidity and mortality despite recent advances in therapies. Its identification at an early stage is crucial to improve outcomes. Pulmonary vascular morphology in COPD is characterized by distal pruning and proximal dilation and has strong associations with important clinical outcomes. I recently performed a genome-wide association study of pulmonary vascular imaging phenotypes in a subset of subjects with available vascular data in the COPDGene to identify genetic determinants of vascular remodeling in COPD. Although no genome-wide significance was reached, this study highlighted new putative genetic factors and biological pathways that may influence pulmonary vascular remodeling in COPD. Given these promising results, we are now in the process of generating these vascular imaging phenotypes in a larger sample size to increase the power of detection of significant associations. Findings from this study may ultimately improve and personalize therapy in this patient population.
