Get to know Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Gabrielle L. Shapiro, who serves patients in New York City, New York.

Dr. Shapiro is a trusted child and adolescent psychiatrist whose clinical focus is on depression, adjustment disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and attention deficit disorder. In addition to her affiliation with Mount Sinai Hospital, she serves as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, New York.

A passionate advocate for child and adolescent psychiatry, she has been active with the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, Sexual Treatment and Education Programs (S.T.E.P.S.), the Wraparound Program (B.E.S.T.), telepsychiatry, school programs in New York and California, as well as the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s (AACAP) Disaster and Trauma, Development, and Religion and Spirituality Committees. She has committed her career to public sector psychiatry and working with immigrants, Native American and Latino children and families to improve the quality of the psychiatric care they receive.

A graduate of New York Medical College, Dr. Shapiro completed her internship in clinical psychiatry at the University of California, Irvine. This was followed by a residency in clinical psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego and a fellowship in child psychiatry at Children’s Hospital & Health Center.

In practice for over three decades, she is board-certified in psychiatry and child & adolescent psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high-quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.

In good standing with a number of professional organizations, Dr. Shapiro is a member of the Medical Society of the State of New York, the New York Council on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the New York County Psychiatric Society, and the New York County Medical Society. She is also a Founding Board Member of the AACAP’s Political Action Committee, and on the Board of Directors of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Foundation.

Child and adolescent psychiatry, also known as pediatric psychiatry, is a branch of psychiatry that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders in children, adolescents, and their families. A child and adolescent psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of thinking, feeling, as well as behavior affecting children, adolescents, and their families.

An APA and AACAP Distinguished Fellow, Dr. Shapiro has given numerous presentations at national and international meetings and conferences, and has authored many publications. She won the Hulse Award in 2017 from the New York Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Bruno Lima Award for her role as a leader in the disaster relief efforts in San Diego from the American Psychiatric Association. She also served as the Editor of the Child Development Chapter of the 2017 Edition of Kaplan and Sadock’s “Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry”
