Dr. Szalasny received her medical degree in 1992 from the Kharkiv National Medical University, formerly known as Kharkiv Medical Institute and previously Kharkiv State Medical University, in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Following her relocation to the United States, she completed the Johns Hopkins University/Sinai Hospital (JHU/Sinai) Residency Program in Internal Medicine (2006-2009), followed by a rheumatology fellowship at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC (2009-2011). 

Subsequent to her education, Dr. Szalasny received board certification in internal medicine and rheumatology from the American Board of Internal Medicine. The American Board of Internal Medicine is a 501 nonprofit, self-appointed physician-evaluation organization that certifies physicians practicing internal medicine and its subspecialties.

Rheumatology is a branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic diseases. Physicians who have undergone formal training in rheumatology are called rheumatologists. Rheumatologists deal mainly with immune-mediated disorders of the musculoskeletal system, soft tissues, autoimmune diseases, vasculitides, and inherited connective tissue disorders.
