  • What happens if a torn meniscus is not treated?

This is a misunderstanding about the term healed. The tear doesn't heal back to a usable functioning entity unless it is put into apposition (surgical). Otherwise it heals and becomes a frayed end and has no functional use. However you can have less than full tears that can still function. READ MORE

  • How long should it take for a chiropractor to fix your back?

In my opinion treating the spine is about function. Everybody's spine is different and responds differently. Some individuals get immediate relief of symptoms, others need a program to get the back able to work efficiently. Other individuals have chronic conditions that need on term care, The goal is to make the spine work well within its own structural parameters. Stretching, exercises, posture, habits and activities of daily living can make a difference. It is important to get help from a licensed professional. Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) are trained to diagnose and treat all the areas of the neuromuscular skeletal system and can assist in developing a program for your individual needs. READ MORE

  • How do I strengthen my back with scoliosis?

Scoliosis can be minimal, mild, moderate or severe. Stretching and exercises are an important part of Conservative treatment of the neuromuscular and skeletal system. The more severe the condition the more structured the exercise program should be. I have some exercise sheets that give a good common stretching program. Chiropractic utilizes these type procedures within their treatment plans. It is important to get personal evaluation of your current condition to determine what is appropriate. Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) are licensed doctors who do diagnosis and either delivers and/or recommends treatment. READ MORE

  • Does scoliosis make you walk weird?

There are minimal and mild scoliosis that look normal to the average person and there are severe scoliosis that are apparent. You need an expert to do a proper evaluation. READ MORE

  • Can chiropractic care help with baby reflux?

  • How should I sleep to improve my posture?

Most authorities recommend sleeping on your side and not always on the same side. Make sure you have good support for your head and neck. READ MORE

  • What is better for sciatica acupuncture or chiropractor?

Diagnosis is the first place to start and that is done by the Doctor of Chiropractic and/or the Medical Doctor. An MRI many times is needed. Just because you have leg pain doesn't mean you have sciatica. As for treatment medication, Acupuncture, Physical Therapy, Exercise therapy and Chiropractic should not be competitive. They should be used in complementary programs. With Sciatica the diagnosis is the most important place to start. READ MORE

  • Is massage therapy good for TMJ?

Massage is one of the treatment modalities that can help with TMJ problems. This depends on examination. TMJ can be a chiropractic, dental and/or medical issue and this needs to be determined. Massage can relax the masseter muscles along with exercises, stress reduction and chiropractic treatment. However, it may also be a dental or medical problem. READ MORE

  • Is chiropractic care good for kids?

  • Can a chiropractor help with a fractured vertebrae?

  • Why does my neck always click?

Cracking or popping on movement is not necessarily a concern if it is not causing additional symptom such as: pain, discomfort, numbness, tingling and/or other problems. However, don't pop or crack your neck on purpose. Light movement under a hot shower allows muscles and tendons to relax and sometimes releases and helps the popping sound. READ MORE

  • Why does my shoulder hurt more at night?

Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) are licensed doctors who do diagnosis and either delivers and/or recommends treatment. That includes all areas of the neuromuscular system. The question is what is causing the problem with the area and that requires diagnosis. Diagnosis can't be done without an examination. If the cause is appropriate and responsive to conservative care then Chiropractic care with its many therapeutic treatments is important and appropriate. Even if the problem has a permanent and/or structural component the treatments may still help, but may not totally eliminate the underlying cause. Don't wait to have the examination, as the sooner the problems are detected and treated the better. READ MORE

  • Can a chiropractor damage your neck?

In all of health care there is a risk in any course of treatment. Historical it has been shown to be very low in Chiropractic. It is always important to understand that all examinations and diagnostic test do not show or even indicate possible underlining pathology. All doctors must exercise judgment during the course of treatment to determine if progress is being made and if diagnostic test need to be done and/or referrals need to be made. I am aware of no document dangers of chiropractic as long as the treatments are done appropriately by a trained and licensed Doctor of Chiropractic. Never have an unlicensed individual adjust any part of your body. The exception to this statement is in the case of malpractice. READ MORE

  • What exercises to avoid with bulging discs?

I have treated many patients successfully with herniated and/or bulging discs. Orthopedic or Neurologic consultation is important. Get to know Chiropractor Dr. Dennis E. Spurgin, who serves patients in Palm Springs, California.

Board-certified through the California State Board of Chiropractic Examiners, Dr. Spurgin is a second generation chiropractor who has been practicing in Palm Springs, California since 1992. His private practice is on the campus of the Desert Healthcare District, which also houses the Desert Regional Medical Center.

Having been successfully treating patients with acute to chronic pain for over forty years, Dr. Spurgin recognizes that every patient is unique and so are his or her needs for treatment. He  always uses soft tissue work, which may involve myofascial release, acupressure, trigger point therapy, vibratory massage, stretch release, and other soft tissue work. He also uses various physiotherapy modalities, including ultrasound, computerized electrical therapy, and vasopneumatic devices.

“I first became interested in chiropractic medicine with a very traumatic accident at age ten when I fell off a horse, landing on my head. As a teenager, I was impressed with the love, respect, and appreciation that my father’s patients showed toward him. When I went into practice with my father, I was given the benefit of the same love, respect, and appreciation from his patients. I love treating people and seeing them getting better. Every day, I look forward to coming to my office and having patients tell me how much better they are and how grateful they are to be doing better. With new patients, I look forward to their next visit to see how they are improving.” as stated by Dr. Spurgin.

Pertaining to his academic background, he earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Logan University in Chesterfield, Missouri in 1971. While there, he was honored to provide services as an expert to the California Board of Chiropractic Examiners, the Office of the State Attorney General, and various prosecuting attorneys in municipalities throughout Southern California regarding Chiropractic Standards of Care. He also took classes at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, a division of the Western University of Health, in its Master of Science Program for Health Care Education.

From 1980 until 1989, Dr. Spurgin served as the Dean of Chiropractic Education and Clinical Studies at South California University’s Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. He chaired committees that developed competency, standards of care, programs for clinical training, and programs for faculty development. Upon leaving college in 1989, he chose to move toward the desert. Initially, he set up a practice in Beaumont before moving to Palm Springs in 1992.

Having been involved with various organizations throughout his extensive career, the doctor has been a member of the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce since 1992 and on its Board of Directors for eight years. He has belonged to three Rotary clubs (Beaumont, Palm Springs, and Palm Springs Sunup) and has held most offices available in these organizations, including President of Beaumont and Palm Springs Sunup Rotaries. Moreover, he was on the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue team for twelve years. His specialty was mountain rescue and he was involved in many rescues that received national recognition.

Along looking to give back, Dr. Spurgin continues to volunteer with many local charity fundraising projects. In the last six years, he has written four Global Grants through The Rotary International Foundation for Severe Acute Malnutrition Disease, thereby funding a fully-sustainable program called Project Peanut Butter for the Philippines, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and Ghana.

Chiropractic medicine is a form of alternative medicine that mainly deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. A chiropractor uses spinal adjustments, extremity adjustments, manipulation, and other techniques to manage patients’ health concerns such as neck pain, back pain, and other joint pain like those to the shoulders and ankles. They aim to improve patients’ functionality and quality of life by properly aligning the body’s musculoskeletal structure and enabling the body to heal itself without medication or surgery.

Following in his footsteps, his son is also a chiropractor.
