Acne Scars: Safe, Simple, Inexpensive & Time-Tested Treatments
In my daily practice devoted to treating all kinds of scars, most especially those arising from acne, I'm sorry to say that I routinely consult with patients who have not only suffered from years of acne but subsequently years of fruitless, disappointing attempts to treat the resultant acne scars....
Rejuvenating The Upper Face--Things CAN Look Up
Up to now, I've discussed the use of robust, injectable volumizing and lifting fillers for framing the face by treating the temples, as well as the rear angles of the jaw and chin. I also emphasized that it is no longer considered de rigeur to jump right into treating smile lines or sad lines...
Your Eyes: More Than Just Windows To The Soul--The Soul Of Youth
In my last blog, I discussed how natural, hyaluronic acid fillers (which are all basically complex sugars) can rejuvenate the "frame of the face" by lifting and volumizing the cheeks to recreate the ideal heart-shaped, high cheekboned look, and diminish tear troughs, smile lines, and sad lines. I...
Framing The Face With Fillers For A Fabulous More Youthful Look
In my last blog post, I explained how aesthetic medical science had made a giant leap forward about fifteen years ago when research findings put a new face to facial aging. We learned that so much of the sagging, drooping, jowls, and deep lines and crevices that appear with the passing decades,...
Getting That Immediate "Wow!" Nonsurgical "Liquid" Facelifts
About fifteen years ago a revolution took place in our understanding of what actually happens to us below the skin as we age. Until that time, the lay public, as well as their doctors, believed that the sagging of the skin that inevitably occurred with the passage of each decade from about age...
Raised Acne Scars: Quick & Simple Fixes To Flatten Them
In my previous blog, I discussed the various quick, simple and inexpensive ways to elevate and smooth sunken, indented boxcar, rolling and ice pick scars. However, not uncommonly, particularly when moderate to severe in nature, nodulocystic acne breakouts can give rise to several different kinds of...
How do I get rid of red spots on my face?
Your description doesn't permit a clear diagnosis. Red spots can be the left over from resolving active acne or rosacea or from irritation from medications used on the face or "broken blood vessels." First, you need a diagnosis and then an appropriate course of treatment outlined. READ MORE
What causes tiny red blood dots on the skin?
Tiny blood vessels, known as telangiectasias, are quite common. Some people have them because of a genetic predisposition. Others get them from overexposure to the sun, usually many years earlier. And still others have them as a manifestation of a condition known as rosacea. They are usually easily treated with gratifying improvement by a dermatologist with short bursts of radiowaves. It's very common condition. READ MORE
What body wash is good for back acne?
Acne is not treated by any washes, since acne is a genetic condition and NOT caused by dirt. So super scrubbing of the skin will do little for acne, but make the skin overly dry and then too rough, dry, irritated to withstand strong acne medications, which are usually necessary to treat back acne (which is typically tougher to treat than facial acne). READ MORE
What will a chemical peel do for my face?
There are many chemicals used for chemical peeling and there are three main types of peels: superfical, medium and deep peels--each with different uses and purposes. Chemical peels can be used to treat acne and rosacea, to freshen the face and make it more glowing, to treat precancers and skin cancers, fade brown spots and melasma, treat wrinkles and tighten the skin. At age 29, you most likely would need it for freshening and brightening the skin or for skin coloration issues. But, naturally, you would first need to be evaluated for any conditions you have and whether chemical peels would even be appropriate for those conditions. READ MORE
What is the best cream for acne scars?
Acne scars are unfortunately not really treatable by at-home treatments of any kind. For real treatment, you need to see a board certified aesthetic physician with particular expertise in treating acne scars who can evaluate what kind of scars you have and recommend appropriate in-office treatments. READ MORE
Can vaseline remove acne scars?
Short answer: Absolutely not. Currently, professional in-office treatments are the most consistent and safest way to treat acne scars. READ MORE
How can I remove acne scars?
You cannot significantly improve acne scars by any at-home treatments. READ MORE
How can I get rid of dark skin moles?
Don't do anything to treat or get rid of your moles until they are checked by a dermatologist. People have died by destroying what they thought were innocent, nuisance beauty and birth marks, which, in fact were actually serious forms of mole cancer (malignant melanoma). READ MORE
How long does back acne last?
Without treatment, back acne will last as long as your genes have predetermined that it will. With proper medical treatment, back acne (which is usually tougher to treat than facial acne) may take several weeks to get under control. READ MORE
Should I see a dermatologist for hair loss?
Most certainly see a dermatologist, who is a board certified specialist in skin, nail and hair disorders. A dermatologist is best for diagnosing the particular hair problem and for prescribing the most appropriate topical and/or oral medications to treat the particular condition. READ MORE
Is microdermabrasion safe for sensitive skin?
Microdermabrasion is little more than what we used to call "epidermabrasion," the kind of skin abrasion you might get from vigorously rubbing your skin with wash cloth, Buf-Puf, Loofah or Clarisonic. Not really worth the money under the best of circumstances and could be irritating to sensitive skin. READ MORE
How long does a carbon facial take?
Carbon facials, like IPL, and microdermabrasion are more marketing and bells and whistles than any supported by any hard science. So, the question would be better posed as not "how long...," but instead whether to waste the money. I don't know exactly what you are trying to treat, although my guess is acne related. You would be wiser to seek consultation with a board certified dermatologist to determine what is most appropriate for you. READ MORE
Which acid is best for acne scars?
It depends upon the type and extent of the acne. The most common superficial peels used for in-office treatment of acne include high potency glycolic or salicylic acids, low potency TCA or Jessner's solution. But all of these are really not for use at home and should be performed only by a trained skin specialist to prevent complications, such as burns, pigmentary disfigurement and scarring. READ MORE
How do dermatologists remove blackheads?
Deep-seated blackheads are best removed manually, either with the use of comedone extractors or #11 surgical blades. A spotted nose with enlarged stuff pores can usually be cleaned dramatically in a couple of minutes. When this is followed with a peel, such as high potency glycolic or salicylic acid, the effect is even more dramatic and pleasing. READ MORE
Does popping pimples cause acne scars?
Pimple popping is not a great idea, since it may result in collagen destruction and permanent scarring. And, even if it doesn't, it most certainly can lead to prolonged redness at the site, which is then can be followed by a disturbingly long period of skin discoloration, known as PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmenation). Resist the urge. READ MORE
How do I permanently get rid of blackheads on my nose?
While blackheads can be cleaned out thoroughly, they tend to refill with time. However, a dermatologist can prescribe certain medications to slow or retard the process dramatically. Left without treatment, they tend to recur. READ MORE
How do you fade acne scars fast?
If you are talking about post-inflammatory erythema (the red spots after acne resolves) or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (the brown spots that persist after the redness resolves), then these can take weeks to months to fade on their own. However, if you are actually talking about true scars, scars are unfortunately permanent and will not fade. READ MORE
How do you treat hyperpigmentation from acne?
PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) following acne can be treated with a variety of topical prescription strength products to accelerate fading. These include hydroquinone in varying concentrations, arbutin, azelaic acid, kojic acid, glycolic acid, tretinoin and occasional topical corticosteroids in combination with the some of the above. If persistent or resistant, the pigmentation may also require in-office treatments to enhance the benefits and accelerate the process of fading. Treatment is best done under the supervision of a dermatologist. READ MORE
How long does it take acne marks to go away?
Acne marks can be discolorations following healing of active acne or actual scars. Discolorations, such as post-inflammatory redness or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation typically takes weeks to months to fade, but the process can be accelerated with the appropriate use of topical at-home, prescription strength medications combined with a series of in-office chemical peels. READ MORE
How can I stop my hair from thinning and falling out?
Your best course of action for treating hair loss is early professional evaluation and intervention in order to retard the rate of loss and reverse the process as much as possible. The precise reason for your hair loss (which can be stress induced, female pattern, hormonal, etc.) needs to be determined and then the best course of treatment recommended. The earlier the intervention, the better.. Good luck. READ MORE
