Dr. Marion Henry, a distinguished Professor of Surgery at The University of Chicago Medicine, has been making significant strides in the field of pediatric surgery. Serving as the Director of Pediatric Trauma at Comer Children’s Hospital, Dr. Henry’s dedication to her patients and her community is truly commendable.

Since assuming her roles at The University of Chicago Medicine and Comer Children’s Hospital, Dr. Henry has not only led a bustling pediatric clinical practice but has also taken on the responsibility of spearheading the Clinical Care/Access DEI Subcommittee. Her commitment to advancing the current and future state of surgery is evident in everything she does.

One of the driving forces behind Dr. Henry’s work is the resilience she witnesses in her young patients. Despite facing severe and sometimes life-threatening circumstances, these children display unwavering hope and determination, inspiring Dr. Henry to strive for better outcomes and a brighter future for them. Her proactive approach to addressing the root causes of pediatric trauma is a testament to her dedication to improving the lives of her patients.

Dr. Henry’s academic journey began at Princeton University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree. She went on to obtain her Doctor of Medicine Degree from Stanford University School of Medicine in 2001, followed by a Master of Public Health Degree from the Yale School of Public Health. Her diverse background and extensive training have equipped her with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the field of pediatric surgery.

Before attending medical school, Dr. Henry enlisted in the Navy. After completing her residency, the Navy stationed her in 29 Palms, California, for a year where she worked as a general surgeon. She then moved to Washington, D.C., for two years to complete her pediatric surgery fellowship. Following this, she was stationed in San Diego, California, serving as a general surgeon for six years. Dr. Henry then relocated to Tucson, where she served at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson for 3 years and 8 months. 

Dr. Henry is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of several prestigious surgical associations, including the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the Association of Women Surgeons, and the American Pediatric Surgical Association.

Dr. Henry’s contributions to the field of pediatric surgery have been recognized through her appointments as a Visiting Professor at Boston Children’s Hospital, an Invited Speaker at the ACS Leadership Summit, and an Invited Speaker at the Illinois Surgical Conference - all in April 2022.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Henry is a devoted wife and a loving mother of three children, including an adopted bearded dragon.
