  • Root canal re-treatment - swollen cheek and gum bump?

I recommend hot salt water rinses a few times a day. Absolutely finish the antibiotic. If the bump continues to grow, contact the Endodontist. Drew Shulman, DMD MAGD READ MORE

  • Crown for a canine (eye) tooth?

The standard of care is to get a crown. Root canal teeth are more prone to fracture. A crown and possibly a new splint would give the tooth the greatest chance of long-term survival. Drew Shulman, DMD, MAGD READ MORE

  • Do decayed teeth have to be removed?

No, not at all. It depends on the size of the decay. A small to moderate amount of decay can be removed and the tooth restored with a filling. A tooth with more decay can be restored with a crown. Extracting a tooth is the last resort. Trying to keep all your teeth should be your priority. Losing them at an early age will be something you will most likely regret later in life. Drew Shulman, DMD, MAGD READ MORE

  • How long does a crown last on a front tooth?

The crown should last a long time. Any where from 10-25 years. Crowns rarely break. They usually fail because of tooth decay that develops under the crown. Brush a few times per day and FLOSS. Drew Shulman, DMD, MAGD READ MORE

  • Do you wear Invisalign to sleep?

Absolutely! Invisalign should be worn at all times except when you are eating, brushing and flossing. If you don’t consistently wear them your teeth will not move as planned and you will have a poor result. If you don’t think you can consistently do that, I recommend you get conventional braces instead. Drew Shulman DMD, MAGD READ MORE

  • Can I drink water after a deep cleaning?

Yes, drinking water is not a problem . Drew Shulman, DMD, MAGD READ MORE

  • Is it normal to have sensitive teeth after anesthesia?

You can have sensitive teeth after any dental procedure. If it doesn’t begin to get better in a few days, contact your dentist . Drew Shulman, DMD, MAGD READ MORE

  • Will an x-ray show dental disease?

Yes, absolutely. Cavities between the teeth can only be detected by X-rays. Gum disease, bone loss, cysts and cancer are often only visible on X-rays. Small problems often don’t hurt. It is only when they become large problems that patients are aware of them. It makes a lot of sense to air the X-rays your dentist recommends. Drew Shulman, DMD, MAGD READ MORE

  • How long should you wear partial dentures each day?

You should be able to wear good fitting partial dentures all day. Take them out at night to give your gums a chance to breath and rest . READ MORE

  • Should I whiten my teeth before bonding?

Yes. Once placed, bonding will not whiten. It is best to whiten first and then match the new color with the bonding. Drew Shulman, DMD, MAGD READ MORE

  • What is the maximum time to wear dentures?

Ideally you should wear them all day long. It is best to take them out at night to give your gums a chance to breath. If you need to sleep with them at night, try and leave them out for a few hours during the day. Drew Shulman, DMD,MAGD READ MORE

  • What is the safest denture adhesive?

They are all safe. There were warnings a few years ago about exposure to excess zinc in denture adhesives. The patients that had these issues were using an extreme amount of adhesive . You should only use about 3 dots per denture. If you need more, see a dentist. Your dentures probably don’t fit. Dr. Drew Shulman READ MORE

  • Can I drink soda after dental implants?

Yes you can drink soda. Soda is very acidic and can erode away the enamel on natural teeth. Frequent soda drinking is one of the most damaging things you can do to your natural teeth. Dental implants are not made of enamel and are not affected by soda. Drew Shulman, DMD,MAGD READ MORE

  • What can I eat after my first dental implant surgery?

If you only have a healing cap and do not have an actual tooth, you have few restrictions. Try to eat on the other side. If there is a tooth on the implant, avoid eating in it. You don’t want to put excess force on a new implant. Drew Shulman, DMD, MAGD READ MORE

  • What can you do for an exposed tooth nerve?

Find a dentist ASAP. Outside of taking pain meds, there is nothing you can do. Dr. Drew Shulman READ MORE

  • Can you brush your teeth after jaw surgery?

It depends on what type of surgery. You should definitely contact the surgeon and ask him/her for postoperative instructions. Drew Shulman, DMD, MAGD READ MORE

  • Can I get braces even if my teeth are straight?

It would only be ethical to give a patient braces if the patient needed them to improve the position of their teeth or for esthetic reasons. It is more difficult to keep your teeth clean while wearing braces and they should only be worn when necessary . Dr. Drew Shulman READ MORE

  • Can dental bonding fall off?

Yes, like any other restoration, nothing lasts forever. If the bonding is on the biting edge of a tooth, it is under a lot of stress and could break more easily. Dr. Drew Shulman READ MORE

  • Are home plaque removers safe?

I am not exactly sure what a home plaque remover is, but if it is a do-it-yourself dental instrument, the answer is no. It may be “safe,” but it would totally be ineffective. Even as a dentist, I am unable to look in the mirror and clean my own teeth! Go to the dentist and have a trained dental hygienist clean your teeth. He/she has years of training. If you want to keep your car, you frequently change the oil. If you want to keep your teeth, get them cleaned at least twice per year. Drew Shulman DMD, MAGD READ MORE
