Dr. Bender specializes in disorders of the shoulder and elbow. He is fellowship-trained in the advanced reconstruction of the shoulder and elbow and has a special focus on both total shoulder and reverse total shoulder replacements, ranging from straight forward cases to the most complex and revision scenarios. He is a member of the prestigious American Shoulder & Elbow Surgeon's society.
In 2018, Dr. Bender joined Methodist Sports Medicine where he treats all forms of shoulder and elbow problems, whether that be young athletes with throwing injuries, fractures, instability, or degenerative conditions of the tendons or joint. He performs both minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and elbow, as well as “open” surgeries for trauma or joint replacements.
You can expect Dr. Bender’s treatment to include a balance between utilizing the benefits of the newest technology and proven, gold-standard treatment principles to achieve the most reliable results. He strongly believes in patient-centered decision-making—where patients feel engaged and comfortable in making informed decisions. He strives to help patients create the best individual treatment plan to help get them back on the field, or experience life pain-free for the first time in months.
Dr. Bender received his undergraduate degree in pre-medicine Biology from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2008 as the school’s valedictorian. He went on receive his doctorate of medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine in 2012, where—as a junior—he became part of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, among the top 4% in his class.
In 2017, Dr. Bender completed his orthopedic surgery residency through Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners/Michigan State University. In 2018, he completed a prestigious shoulder and elbow reconstruction fellowship in Houston under the instruction of Dr. T. Bradley Edwards with Texas Education & Research Foundation for Shoulder & Elbow Surgery at Texas Orthopedic Hospital.
Outside the office, Dr. Bender also works as the team physician for Park Tudor High School and team consultant to Indiana State University Athletics. To train for this role, he formerly assisted the team physician of the Houston Astros in treating their athletes with various types of throwing injuries, surgeries, and rehab.
An Indiana native, Dr. Bender and his wife enjoy living and practicing medicine in their home state. They are the proud parents of twin boys and a daughter. In his free time, Dr. Bender enjoys golf, basketball, fishing, time with his kids, and involvement in his church.
