Dr. Martin is an accomplished cardiothoracic surgeon.  Since 2010 he has served as the Medical Director of Borgess Cardiothoracic Surgery, which is a part of the Borgess Heart Institute at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Prior to this, he was in private practice at a number of hospitals in the Metro Detroit area, including Ascension St. John Hospital since 1988.

Ascension Borgess Hospital is nationally recognized for its high quality and exemplary outcomes in Cardiac Surgery.  It is also proud to be a major regional referral center for high quality General Cardiology, and is nationally recognized for Interventional Cardiology, as well as its robust, high quality Structural Heart Disease program.  

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned a BS-MT degree in Medical Technology at Michigan State University. He then earned his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1980. He went on to complete his residency in general surgery and his fellowship in Cardio-thoracic surgery at the Detroit Medical Center.

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is board-certified in cardiac and thoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.  He has served on the board of directors of the Michigan Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons and remains active in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons nationally.
