Get to know Physiatrist Dr. April Fetzer, who serves patients in Florida.

Dr. Fetzer, an established interventional physiatrist, is a physician at Joint Implant Surgeons of Florida, seeing patients at their offices in Fort Myers and Naples, Florida. 

At Joint Implant Surgeons of Florida, Dr. Fetzer’s mission is to provide safe, high quality non-surgical spine care to restore each individual’s independence and quality of life. Dr. Fetzer is double board certified and fellowship-trained in her subspecialty. This means she has completed additional training beyond the traditional, basic residency preparation.

Specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal disorders with special training in nonsurgical care of neck and back pain, Dr. Fetzer performs fluoroscopic-guided spine injections, trigger point injections in the management of myofascial pain, joint and soft tissue injections of the upper and lower extremities as well as electromyography and nerve conduction studies.

She combines her expertise of rehabilitation, interventional spine treatment regimens, and pain medicine to comprehensively treat the patient. She excels in patient communication, and strives to individually tailor each patient’s plan of care to reach the common goal of pain relief and restoration of function.

Graduating with her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Illinois, Champaign, Dr. Fetzer went on to earn her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Des Moines University. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, where she served as chief resident. She then completed her fellowship in Interventional Spine at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Dedicated to clinical excellence, the doctor is board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and secondly in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR). 

With over 15 years of experience in the field, Dr. Fetzer joined Joint Implant Surgeons of Florida in September of 2019. Previously, she served as the primary non-operative interventional physiatrist at the prestigious Midwest Orthopedics @ RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago. There, she enjoyed a thriving practice that included non-operative spine intervention for adults, including professional athletes from the Chicago White Sox, the Chicago Bulls, DePaul University, and the Joffrey Ballet.

With a passion for teaching, she served as an Assistant Professor in both the departments of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Orthopedics at RUSH University Hospital from 2004-2019. Dr. Fetzer also served as a faculty member for the Advanced Lumbar Spinal Injection course hosted by the North American Spine Society.

Among her professional affiliations, she is an active member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the North American Spine Society, the  American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, the Spine Intervention Society, and the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. Physiatrists treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

Among her various accolades, Dr. Fetzer has been the recipient of Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2020, 2009), Patients’ Choice Award (2020), and On-Time Doctor Award (2020).
