  • My left ear feels blocked?

It may just be a wax build up. Go see your primary care.  READ MORE

  • Why do I wake up with my ears hurting?

I would see your primary care and then an Ear, Nose and Throat physician.  READ MORE

  • Can difficulty hearing affect your speech?

We usually think about that more with children because they're still developing their speech and language. With adults, the common effect of hearing loss on your own speech is talking louder to hear yourself. I suggest you have a hearing evaluation to get to the bottom of it.  READ MORE

  • What causes buzzing noises in your ear?

If it lasts less than five minutes and comes and goes, it's within normal limits and may be caused by a transient change in blood flow to the inner ear. Nothing to be concerned about. If it lasts several minutes to being constant, that is considered "tinnitus", which is a phantom noise perceived in the ears that is created by hyperactivity in the auditory portion of the brain. Tinnitus is very common. The most common causes are noise exposure, hearing loss, ear infections, ear surgery, medications, and chronic health conditions (i.e., diabetes, heart or kidney disease). If you are concerned, I suggest getting your hearing tested. The number one cause of tinnitus is noise exposure. If you're exposed to a lot of noise through work or hobby activities, consult with an audiologist about hearing protection.  READ MORE

  • How often should you get a hearing test?

When you're young and healthy without hearing concerns and without regular exposure to noise I'd say every 3-5 years. If the above are not true, then I'd recommend every year. Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone READ MORE

  • How often should I get a hearing exam over 50?

It depends on your lifestyle. If you have certain health issues (i.e., diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, cancer with chemotherapy) or are exposed to occupational or recreational noise regularly, I would get it checked at least once a year and make sure you're wearing appropriate hearing protection regularly. If you're healthy, not regularly exposed to noise and have no concerns about hearing loss, I'd recommend everything 2-3 years.  READ MORE

  • Recovery for a stapedectomy surgery?

That's something that should be discussed with your surgeon. They should review all of that at your pre-OP appointment.  READ MORE

  • Why does my ear hurt after using a cotton swab?

It's possible you've got impacted wax and you're pushing on it. Stop using the swabs for a bit and see what happens.  READ MORE

  • Ear efussion?

Sounds like you need to see an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist ASAP. They should be able to get that figured out for you.  READ MORE

  • How do you know if your hearing is good?

Best thing you can do is go get it checked.  READ MORE

  • Why do I wake up with ear pain in the morning?

Where is the pain specifically in the ear? Do you sleep on the ear that hurts? How long does the pain persist after waking up? If it's persisting, then I would see an Ear, Nose and Throat (i.e. ENT) physician. READ MORE

  • How do you sleep when you hear ringing noises?

Do you have it constantly or do you only notice it for a short time before falling asleep? If it's distracting you from falling asleep, I would suggest putting some noise on in the background (i.e., fan, humidifier, meditation music, etc.). I might also suggest getting your hearing checked. Constant "ringing" in the ears is called tinnitus. It's very common and can be a symptom of hearing loss, but not always.  READ MORE

  • Can heart problems appear through hearing issues?

Yes, low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss has been linked to cardiovascular disease, and that type and pattern of hearing loss often shows up before the cardiovascular disease. It is somewhat of a predictor. However, pre-existing bearing loss can also be exacerbated by cardiovascular disease.  READ MORE

  • Why does my daughter hear a clicking sound?

Well, it's hard to say for sure. Does it just happen in one ear? How long does it last? Does it happen with or without jaw movement? First ideas: could be ear wax shifting. Could be clicking with jaw movement. Could be middle ear muscle twitching. If you're concerned, you could take her to see her pediatrician or an ear, nose and throat physician. Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone READ MORE

  • How can I test my baby's hearing?

You can take him to an audiologist and they will do Visual Reinforcement Audiometry and a few other things to determine his hearing status.  READ MORE

  • Could my auditory nerve get damaged at birth?

Hmm, yes, that's possible that the use of clamps caused damage depending on how and where they were used, but hard to know for sure. Have you had an MRI and/or CT scan of your head with special attention to the auditory structures on both sides? Those scans can potentially show structural defects, damage, etc that may be responsible for the hearing loss. If not, it could be a pathology on the cellular level, which can't be seen. Is there any history of hearing loss in the family? Genetics play a pretty significant role in hearing loss when its onset is early in life. Truthfully, although a lot is known about the auditory system, it is extremely complex, and we are still scratching the surface. It's not uncommon for the etiology (or cause) of an auditory pathology to be unknown. Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone READ MORE

  • How often should a child get their hearing checked?

They should be testing it in school every 2 to 3 years, but that might vary by state. Aside from that, if you have concerns, you can take him to an audiologist privately to have it checked. There's no set amount of time that it should be checked, but I would definitely have it checked every 2 to 3 years if they're not doing it in school. Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone READ MORE

  • Can your tonsils cause ear pain?

Yes, possibly, if your tonsils are inflamed.  READ MORE

  • Can hearing improve over time?

Typically no, but if you had an infection or something that caused a temporary hearing loss, hearing would improve after that was cleared up. Another possibility is some wax in the ear shifted and created an opening that you may be perceiving as an improvement.  READ MORE

  • Is listening to podcasts several hours a day bad for your ears?

As far as we know right now, it can be if the volume is above 85 dB.  READ MORE
