Get to know Pediatrician, Dr. Sophia Morisseau DeCambre, who serves patients throughout the State of New York.
An exceptional physician, Dr. DeCambre had been a pediatrician at the Joseph P Addabbo Family Health Center for 3 years, but recently has gone on to work with Morris Heights Health Center to work and serve in the community she grew up with.
As a pediatrician, she lets her patients know that the choices they make will affect them not only today, but tomorrow as well. She loves the connections she makes with the families through general pediatrics. “In a way, I become part of the family. The roles I play are numerous- doctor, teacher, counselor, advocate, prayer partner, and friend. I love that pediatric medicine allows me to fill those roles, and allows me to watch the families evolve and grow” expressed Dr. DeCambre.
Wanting to be a pediatrician since she was in grade school, she volunteered in the pediatric ward at Kings County Hospital when she was 14 years old. In high school, she was in the pre-medical club and after she graduated, she worked as a teacher in a day care center.
Dr. DeCambre received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the State University of New York New Paltz. While in college, she started a Medical Association for Pre-Med students (MAPS) chapter. She then graduated with her medical degree and did her residency in pediatrics at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
Passionate about her profession, she is board-certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.
Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends individuals be under pediatric care up to the age of 21. Pediatricians provide medical care to people ranging in age from newborns to young adults. They are trained to examine, diagnose, and treat children with a wide variety of injuries and illnesses through all of their developmental stages, as they grow and mature.
With years of experience in her field, Dr. DeCambre has been the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award, Compassionate Doctor Recognition, and On-Time Doctor Award.
On a more personal note, Dr. DeCambre is very family and faith oriented. She is married with three children, loves to spend quality family time, and knows with God, all things are possible.
