Get to know Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Wakelin, who serves patients in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Wakelin is a renowned, top-rated, board-certified plastic surgeon at Columbus Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery in Columbus, Ohio. He understands that getting plastic surgery can sometimes be scary or stressful, but it doesn’t need to be. With a solid background of training and education, Dr. Wakelin also serves on the Clinical Faculty of The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health, where he first received his medical degree and now teaches residents and medical students daily. He did a residency in general surgery at Mount Carmel Medical Center and then completed a residency in plastic surgery at The Ohio State University Medical Center. He was recently part of a select group of plastic surgeons who completed advanced training in breast augmentation with Mentor Worldwide LLC, including topics on the Latest Technologies in Breast Implant Sizing and Advanced Techniques in Breast Augmentation and Revision Surgery. 

Among the doctor’s impressive list of academic and professional achievements, he is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, whose mission is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification, and continuous certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. From 2008 until 2014, he served as the Chair of Plastic Surgery at Riverside Methodist Hospital. 

Widely recognized as a talented and caring plastic surgeon, Dr. Wakelin was selected as one of the top 5 plastic surgeons in the Consumers’ Checkbook Guide to Top Doctors in Columbus. Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It can be divided into two main categories – reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. A plastic surgeon’s primary responsibility is performing surgical and non-surgical procedures and they use a variety of reparative and reconstructive techniques to get the job done. 

Committed to maintaining and staying up to date on the latest and greatest advancements in plastic surgery, Dr. Wakelin continually attends and teaches at conferences. He is also strongly and enthusiastically involved in several charitable organizations and has completed missions through Operation Smile in several developing countries such as Honduras, Paraguay, Nicaragua, Peru, Egypt, China, and Morocco, where he performed reconstructive surgery on children and adults with cleft lips and palates.

“One of the best parts of my job is the diversity of what I do. I see patients from all walks of life and under various circumstances for both reconstructive and cosmetic reasons — and frequently for a combination of both. People ask me all the time what my favorite procedure is, and I honestly don’t have one. I even enjoy the non-surgical aspects of my practice like fillers and Botox. At the end of the day, I went into plastic surgery not because I would learn particular procedures, but because it would teach me skills to solve a myriad of problems in unique ways that would continue to evolve over my career” as stated by Dr. Wakelin. 

When the doctor isn’t busy helping to improve patients’ aesthetic goals and confidence, he enjoys traveling, reading, cooking with his wife, and spending time with his two young children.
