A board-certified neurologist, Dr. Triantafylou-Bernitsas joined the Department of Neurology at Wayne State University in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 2011. She is an Associate Professor of Neurology and the Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at Wayne State School of Medicine. Dr. Bernitsas leads an active clinical research program and she is the Principal Investigator on numerous clinical and investigator-initiated trials. Her clinical research focuses on aggressive forms of MS, new immunomodulatory therapies and symptomatic interventions. Clinical interests include MS fatigue, MS and epilepsy, neuroimaging and OCT.
In 1995, Dr. Triantafylou-Bernitsas received her medical degree from the Aristotelian Medical School in Thessaloniki, Greece. After relocating to the United States, she completed an internship at Mercy Health Partners in Toledo, Ohio (2004-2005), followed by a neurology residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio (2005 – 2008). Moreover, she conducted a fellowship in neuroimmunology at Maxine Mesinger Comprehensive MS Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas (2008 – 2009).
Upon the completion of her training, Dr. Bernitsas obtained board certification in neurology from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation that was founded in 1934 as a method of identifying qualified specialists in psychiatry and neurology. The ABPN is one of 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and disease involving the central and peripheral nervous systems, including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle.
Dr. Bernitsas maintans laboratory research interests in novel neuroimaging and optical coherence tomography that lead to a better understanding of the disease, pathophysiology and imaging of MS fatigue and the use of biomarkers in neuroprotection and remyelination. Currently, she serves as the Editor-in Chief in the Neuroimaging section of the Brain Sciences Journal. She has published extensively and served in several committees and advisory boards.
