Dr. Charles L. Vogel is a top doctor in Plantation FL. Trained at Princeton, Yale, Emory, and the U.S. National Cancer Institute, he is considered a national and international key opinion leader in breast cancer treatment and clinical research. After serving with the NCI as an advisor at the Uganda (East Africa) Cancer Institute for 4 years he started the first Oncology unit at Grady Memorial Hospital (Emory Univ) in 1974. One year later he became the first Director of the Division of Breast Cancer at the Univ. Of Miami School of Medicine. In 1986 he gave up a tenured full professorship in order to become one of the pioneers in developing breast cancer clinical trials from within a private practice setting. Over the next 3 decades, he published over 500 manuscripts and abstracts mostly on breast cancer treatments. He is best known for his clinical trials work with Herceptin and other Her 2 targeted drugs and for publishing the paper changing national and international guidelines for the use of Neulasta to prevent chemo-induced infections. In 2010, he returned to the Sylvester Cancer Center of the Univ. of Miami until January 2021 when he joined the Miami Cancer Institute of Baptist Health South in Plantation Florida. His first book "Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer: You are not a statistic" will be published in 2022. The doctor joined Miami Cancer Institute from the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he was the Director of the Women’s Center of the Sylvester Center’s Deerfield Beach satellite facility.
Back in 1964, Dr. Vogel earned his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. He then went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at the Grady Memorial Hospital in 1966, followed by a fellowship in medical oncology at the NIH Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center in 1969.
As a testament of his continued education, he is board-certified in medical oncology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
In the 1970s, Dr. Vogel served as the Chief of the National Cancer Institute’s Uganda Cancer Institute. After practicing in Uganda, he received the United States Public Health Service Commendation Medal.
More than 250 of his manuscripts have been published in peer-reviewed publications. During his time in Uganda, he was part of the research team that demonstrated the relationship between hepatitis and primary liver cancer. He also published one of three initial clinical trials of Herceptin for women with breast cancer.
In 2019, Dr. Vogel was awarded the First Annual “Legend in Cancer Care” Award at Total Health Conferencing’s “Best of Breast” conference. That same year, he also received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s “Health Care Heroes” award ceremony.
When he is not treating patients, he enjoys spending time with his wife, traveling with family and scuba diving. He has completed more than 500 dives all over the world and visits St. Kitts each year to dive with sharks.
