Get to know Nephrologist Dr. David E. Allen, who serves patients in Augusta, Georgia. 

Dr. Allen is a board-certified nephrologist, who is in practice with East Georgia Kidney & Hypertension of University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. Established in 1818, University Hospital is a non-profit 581-bed private hospital and the second-oldest hospital in Georgia. Although University Hospital is considered a teaching institution, it does not currently sponsor an academic program resulting in a degree.

With more than two decades of experience in his field, the doctor is also affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Augusta University Medical Center and Coliseum Northside Hospital. 

His acclaimed career in medicine began in 1997 when he earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson, Mississippi. He then went on to complete his internship and residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. This was followed by fellowship training at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. 

Driven to advance his knowledge and expertise, Dr. Allen is board-certified in both internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatric medicine that concerns itself with the kidneys. This includes the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. A nephrologist is a medical doctor who specializes in kidney care and treating diseases of the kidneys.
