How long does it take to straighten your arm after a broken elbow?
There are several bones in your elbow. Each has its own degree of time to recover. That said, elbows do not like to be injured and can take away some time to achieve full straightening or extension. Flexion or bending tends to be somewhat less of a problem. A good physical therapist can be very helpful. Naturally, you need to discuss your condition with your orthopedic surgeon. READ MORE
How do you fix a dislocated elbow?
A true elbow dislocation requires emergency orthopedic care. I dislocated bone in the elbow in a baby it’s called a nursemaids elbow. Only one bone is partially out of place. That is a very different situation. Just located elbows typically require anesthesia and manipulation to put the bones back in place. In addition, ligament damage is also a likely end result of a dislocation. An MRI would be necessary. Sometimes the ligaments need to be repaired surgically. So are you feeling discomfort. The first thing you should do is to make sure you address these issues with the surgeon who did your surgery three months ago. It is still very early in your recovery. Stressing an individual and personalized approach to patient care, Dr. Cahill specializes in the treatment of a variety of orthopedic conditions and performs several orthopedic procedures including: arthroscopic surgery of shoulder, knee, elbow and ankle; ACL reconstruction; hip, knee, and shoulder joint replacement; adult and pediatric sports medicine; cartilage repair and restoration; and trauma.
“My initial approach to most injuries is a non-operative attempt to avoid surgery when possible. When surgical treatment is necessary, current reconstructive techniques can return patients to a full level of activity. Over the past five years, surgical techniques have advanced considerably. We are able to achieve excellent levels of success in patient satisfaction. We are also much better in controlling the discomfort often associated with surgical treatment specifically, joint replacement surgery” expressed the doctor.
In practice for over twenty years, he is a senior attending physician and one of the founding members of the Center for Joint Replacement at Hackensack Medical Center. He is also affiliated with Holy Name Hospital and Valley Hospital.
Pertaining to his educational background, Dr. Cahill graduated with his undergraduate degree from The Johns Hopkins University. He then went on to earn his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Furthering his training, he performed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at Montefiore Medical Center. He followed this up with fellowships in sports medicine and pediatric orthopedics at The Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopedic Institute in New York.
Utilizing science and technology, he is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.
In good standing with a number of professional organizations, Dr. Cahill is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the New Jersey Orthopedic Association, the Bergen County Medical Society, and the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine.
Additionally, he is certified in Robotic Surgery for Joint Replacements (MAKO), and in Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation for Cartilage Repair.
Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
Currently, Dr. Cahill has particular interests in joint replacements, arthroscopic shoulder and knee ligament repair/reconstructive surgery as well as treatment of cartilage injuries. He has lectured on and participated in original research for the treatment of cartilage injuries that ultimately require cartilage repair and reconstruction.
