Graduating with his medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1980, he went on to further his training by completing a residency in internal medicine at the Charleston Area Medical Center in 1983.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP), the doctor is board-certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). The ABEM is one of 24 medical specialty certification boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
