Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Lawrence Drerup, who serves patients in Alexandria, Louisiana.

A top neurosurgeon, Dr. Drerup has been with Alexandria Neurosurgical Clinic since 1989. He maintains a very active practice, caring for patients with a wide variety of general neurosurgical conditions. 

The board-certified neurosurgeons of Alexandria Neurosurgical Clinic are trained in the very latest techniques in neurosurgery, treating all cervical and lumbar spine conditions including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, spinal cord tumors, spinal fractures, and Arnold-Chiari malformations. They also treat patients with cranial diseases such as hydrocephalus, brain tumors, aneurysms, hematomas and arteriovenous malformations. They are on staff at Central Louisiana Surgical Hospital, Rapides Regional Medical Center, and Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.

Specializing in minimally invasive microscopic techniques for spine surgery, Dr. Drerup has been instrumental in the development of these techniques. He continues to provide cutting edge technology for spinal surgery and is an educator in this field, holding a clinical staff teaching position with LSU Shreveport.

His acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1983. He then went on to perform his residency in neurological surgery at the University of Tennessee Affiliated Hospitals.

Remaining at the forefront of his challenging field, Dr. Drerup is board-certified through the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). The broad aim of the ABNS is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards and advance the science of neurological surgery and thereby serve the cause of public health.

Among his professional affiliations, he is an active member of the Rapides Parish Medical Society, the Louisiana State Medical Society, the Louisiana Neurosurgical Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Southern Neurosurgical Society, and the American Back Society. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS).

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, cervical and lumbar disc disease, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.
