Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Kevin L. Waltz, who serves patients in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Dr. Waltz is an accomplished ophthalmic surgeon with extensive experience in international charity eye care, ophthalmic research, advanced cataract surgery, and refractive surgery. He is the President of Ophthalmic Research Consultants in Indianapolis, Indiana & Chair of the Board of Directors for Central American Eye Clinics.

Practicing medicine in Indiana, he is affiliated with Community Hospital of Anderson and Madison County, Community Hospital North, Hancock Regional Hospital, and MHP Major Hospital.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Waltz graduated with his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Indiana University School of Optometry in 1981, and completed two years of extra training at Southern College of Optometry in 1983. He received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College, with honors, in 1987, and then completed a one-year medical internship at Vanderbilt University in 1988.

In 1991, he completed a three-year residency in ophthalmology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He was selected for a prestigious oculoplastic fellowship at Wayne State University to receive specialized training in surgery of the eyelids, orbits, and tear ducts. He completed his formal medical training in 1992, eighteen years after he graduated from high school.

Following his training, Dr. Waltz became a full-time Assistant Professor of Surgery at Southern Illinois University. He taught surgery of the eyes, eyelids, orbits, and tear ducts, including cosmetic surgery. He also co-authored a textbook on surgery of the tear ducts and eyelids with Frank Nesi, MD.

Since the mid-1990s, Dr. Waltz’s primary professional interest has been refractive surgery, including laser vision correction and refractive lens surgery. He was one of the first surgeons in Indiana to use lasers to correct nearsighted vision, and was the first ophthalmologist in the world to receive the Array multifocal lens as a patient. He was also one of the first ophthalmologists in the world to implant an Array lens in a refractive surgery patient. His pioneering efforts have taught numerous eye surgeons from around the world how to successfully use Prelex to help reduce patients’ dependence on glasses.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

Throughout his line of work, Dr. Waltz has served as vice president of Eye Surgeons of Indiana, as well as co-medical director of TLC Indiana Laser Center. As a result, he has been very involved in the School of Optometry’s Indianapolis Clinic. He and his wife, Rhonda, have made significant contributions to IU, both as volunteers as well as donors.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.

Having been named to Indianapolis’s Top Docs list, Dr. Waltz is regularly asked to discuss cataract surgery and refractive lens surgery with surgeons and optometrists around the world. He participates in FDA clinical trials to develop the latest medications and implants to further improve and refine eye surgery in the United States.

With a long standing interest in international charity care in the developing world, especially in Central America, he has recently become the Chair of the Board of Directors for Central American Eye Cliníca to leverage that organization’s members’ ability to improve eye care in the developing world.
