Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Justin Van Meeteren, who serves patients in Kansas City, Missouri.

A board-certified and fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Van Meeteren is in practice at Midwest Heart and Vascular Specialists in Kansas City, Missouri. He can also be found on staff at Research Medical Center, Centerpoint Medical Center, Overland Park Regional Medical Center, and Menorah Medical Center.

Offering nearly 10 years of experience, he is a participating surgeon in the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) program within the Structural Heart Center at the Heart & Vascular Institute at HCA Midwest Health. He specializes in heart and lung surgery, thoracic aneurysm repair, Maze procedure, mitral valve surgery, valve repair or replacement (aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary), and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) or thoracotomy.

Graduating with his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2008, Dr. Van Meeteren went on to complete his residency at the Akron General Medical Center in 2013, and his fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in 2016.

Following his training, the doctor attained board certification in cardiothoracic surgery and general surgery through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery (AOBS). The AOBS is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the use of surgery to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs.
