Areas of research

While at Duke University School of Medicine, I obtained a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship award to support my work in the lab of Dr. Saul Schanberg to research the effects of maternal touch on growth-related gene expression in neonatal rats. This research is profoundly meaningful to me as a family physician as this speaks directly to the effect of social interactions especially at an early age and the longterm effects on our health what we now call epigenetics.

While an undergraduate at UNC Chapel Hill, I completed an undergraduate research project on the evidence for expression of two isoforms the A1 hnRNP protein in African frogs.

As a primary care physician, my understanding of molecular biology and genetics has provided a solid basis for my ability to understand disease states and their treatments but more importantly it has enriched my ability to care for my patients and understand the impact health behaviors and how the Social Determinants of Health have profound effects on overall wellbeing.

Following medical school, she completed her residency in the Department of Family Medicine at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC, where her love of the care of the entire family grew.  After residency, she completed a fellowship in obstetrics at Moses Cone Health System further enhancing her expertise in women’s health and newborn care and preparing her better to serve her home community. She then founded Mount Jefferson Family Medicine in her hometown of Jefferson, NC in 1999, where she provided full spectrum care including outpatient and inpatient medicine, obstetrics, and nursing home care for 14 years.

Dr. Fowler has a passion for teaching and has served as a clinical preceptor for the UNC School of Medicine as well as Duke University School of Medicine.  Currently she assists with recruiting community preceptors to the UNC School of Medicine Raleigh Campus where also she teaches medical students in her clinic. One of her proudest achievements was being awarded with the Community Teaching Award by the UNC School of Medicine in 2022.

Dr. Fowler currently holds several prestigious positions that showcase her commitment to healthcare excellence. She is the Chair of the North Carolina Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control (since 2023) and was designated a Clinical Champion for the Southeastern US by the American Cancer Society (since 2023).   She advocates for equity in health care within her organization where she serves on the WakeMed Diversity and Inclusion Council (since 2023) and has been a Delegate for NCAFP LGBTQ+ constituency at the AAFP National Conference of Constituency Leaders (2022, 2024). She is proud to serve as a Physician Delegate on the NC Academy of Family Physicians Foundation Board (since 2022) and also as a Family Medicine Mentor at The Center for Community-Based Primary Care (since 2022).   She is dedicated to providing  individualized high-quality, high-value care to each of her patients and serves as a Director for WakeMed Primary Care to the local ACO Wake Key Community Care (since 2021).

Outside of her professional commitments, Dr. Fowler loves spending quality time with her husband and children, whether it is movie night at home or an escape to western North Carolina to visit her family. She loves ACC basketball and football and is an avid Carolina Tarheel fan. Her favorite destinations include the Florida Keys, Hawaii, and the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Her love for knowledge is reflected in her long standing subscription to the New England Journal of Medicine as well as the array of books on health and wellness which occupy her nightstand.

As a compassionate and knowledgeable physician in the field of family medicine, Dr. Vickie Fowler continues to positively impact the lives of her patients and the community at large through her unwavering commitment to excellence in healthcare.   She is a strong advocate for her specialty and hopes to foster a future in which all patients have access to a caring, trusted and knowledgeable primary care physician.
