Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Lawrence I. Barr, who serves patients throughout the State of New Jersey.

As a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Barr is skilled in spinal reconstructive surgery, minimally invasive spinal procedures, carpal tunnel treatment, sports medicine, and general orthopaedics. In the summer of 1993, he joined Garden State Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine. There, he centers his work in orthopaedic surgery, treatment of industrial and work-related injuries, orthopaedic disability evaluations, and independent medical evaluations.   

Garden State Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine offers the most comprehensive orthopaedic care available, including orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine, knee and shoulder surgery, permanency exams, and second opinions. In New Jersey, need-for-treatment exams are often required to be eligible to receive treatment and assistance. In the case of permanency exams, Dr. Barr is skilled at determining the degree of disability, having successfully trained and practiced in these types of evaluations. 

Likewise, in many cases, insurance companies and plaintiff’s counsel need a qualified orthopaedic specialist to review treatment profiles and complete independent medical  evaluations (IMEs). As such, Dr. Barr takes the time to thoroughly review each patient’s records and examine the patient to determine if the right course of action is being taken. 

On the subject of his educational background, Dr. Barr obtained his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1987. He then went on to serve his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the same educational venue, followed by his fellowship in orthopaedic surgery of the spine at Lutheran Medical Center.

Following his training, he became board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, an organization that provides board certification to qualified DOs who specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system. 

The doctor’s professional memberships include the American Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association, the International Academy of Independent Medical Evaluators, the Pennsylvania Medical Association, the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society, the Medical Society of New Jersey, and the Camden County Medical Society. His hospital affiliations include Virtua Health System, Jefferson Health, and The Surgical Center of South Jersey.

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
