Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Peraiah Sudanagunta, who serves patients in California.

Dr. Sudanagunta is a general surgeon who, since 1972, has been serving as Chief of Staff at Memorial Hospital Los Banos in California. He is experienced in the areas of general surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and endoscopy.

Memorial Hospital Los Banos is a not-for-profit hospital, part of the Sutter Health network, providing health care services to patients in Los Banos. The hospital’s mission is to enhance the well-being of people in the communities it serves through a not-for-profit commitment to compassion and excellence in healthcare services.

Back in 1964, Dr. Sudanagunta graduated with his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from Guntur Medical College in India. He then relocated to the United States, performing his internship at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Thereafter, he furthered his training with a residency in surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago, where he served as chief resident. He also completed a Master of Public Health degree in Health Administration at USF in 1998.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.

Fluent in both English and Telugu, Dr. Sudanagunta is the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award (2014).
