Leading general and bariatric surgeon, Dr. Sosa, is the Founder of The Sosa Clinic in Hialeah, Florida. A pioneer in weight loss surgery, he has devoted a significant part of his practice to weight loss and reflux surgeries, as well as anti-aging and wellness treatments.
“At The Sosa Clinic, our mission is to offer weight loss surgery to help patients on their journey to overcome severe obesity and its associated medical problems. The cornerstone of our philosophy is a commitment to excellence and a long term involvement in our patients’ care” as stated on the practice’s website.
In his current capacity, Dr. Sosa is affiliated with Jackson North Medical Center, Larkin Community Hospital-Palm Springs Campus, and Palmetto General Hospital (where he is the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery). “Palmetto is part of the community. It is one of the biggest hospitals in this area, and over the last 20 years, it has grown into a major tertiary facility with very advanced clinical programs. It is a great opportunity and pleasure to build something from the ground up” as stated by the doctor.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is board-certified in general surgery and surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
Back in 1987, Dr. Sosa obtained his medical degree from the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery and his fellowship in surgical critical care at Jackson Memorial Hospital, during which time he gained expertise in laparoscopic surgery.
Once in private practice, he decided to specialize in bariatric surgery and performed his first bariatric procedure in 2001. Since then, he has operated on more than 8,000 bariatric surgery patients, while continuing to practice as general surgeon performing gallbladder, hernia, colon, and other abdominal surgeries.
In order to stay up to date in his field, Dr. Sosa remains a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Medical Association.
General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.
Bariatric surgery (or weight loss surgery) includes a variety of procedures performed on people who are obese. Long-term weight loss through Standard of Care procedures (Roux en Y Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, and Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch) is largely achieved by altering gut hormone levels that are responsible for hunger and satiety, thereby leading to a new hormonal weight set point. A doctor who specializes in this type of surgery is known as a bariatric surgeon.
A leader in his field, Dr. Sosa is a published author of multiple medical articles and book chapters on disciplines of general surgery and laparoscopic surgery. He has been featured in news media and forums including NBC Today, South Florida, Despierta America, Cada Día, The Miami Herald, FIU Magazine, and other local news broadcasts, magazines, and gazettes.
