Southern Brain & Spine was founded in 2006, with the specific purpose of committing the most competent and compassionate physicians to the neurosurgical needs of Greater New Orleans. The neurosurgeons are fellowship-trained, board-certified, and their experience and concern about each patient’s well-being is reflected in their quarterly patient satisfaction surveys. They bring vast experience and cutting-edge neurosurgical techniques, from brain microsurgery to minimally invasive spine surgery, remaining dedicated to the non-surgical and surgical treatment of injuries or disorders of the brain, spine or peripheral nerves.
A native of Louisiana, Dr. Thomas graduated with his medical degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1997. He then went on to perform his residency in neurological surgery at the said establishment. He also trained at the world famous Charity Hospital in New Orleans, and completed special additional training on complex spine and minimally invasive spinal procedures in Memphis, Tennessee, under the direction of Kevin T. Foley, MD.
Subsequent to his education, he attained board certification through the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). The broad aim of the ABNS is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards and advance the science of neurological surgery and thereby serve the cause of public health.
With a commitment to restoring health and wellness, Dr. Thomas is affiliated with East Jefferson General Hospital and Touro Infirmary.
In addition to being a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, he is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, cervical and lumbar disc disease, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.

He has lectured about spinal procedures on four continents and has had interactions with hundreds of surgeons around the world.
