Dr. Franz is a dual board-certified and fellowship-trained vascular surgeon serving as the Medical Director of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery with Methodist Medical Group – Vascular Surgery in Memphis, Tennessee. It is a part of the Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare network.

Some of his areas of expertise include: abdominal aortic aneurysm, thoracic aortic aneurysm, treatment of carotid artery disease, varicose vein and laser vein ablation, limb salvage, peripheral vascular disease, vascular research, endograft aneurysm repair, and angioplasty - stent and laser.

His path to becoming a doctor actually started in high school with a sports injury. Dr. Franz, who grew up on the east side of Cincinnati playing football, basketball, and baseball, injured his leg during a game. The care that the orthopedic surgeon provided him healed more than just his leg. It also inspired him to become a doctor.

“I was so impressed with the knowledge that the physician had. His knowledge and care enabled my leg to heal and allowed me to return to sports” expressed Dr. Franz. He went on to volunteer at a local hospital.

After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Cincinnati, where he majored in biology. Following graduation, he started medical school at the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University, graduating in 1992. He then went on to perform his residency in general surgery at the same educational venue, followed by his fellowship in vascular surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

After completing his fellowship, Dr. Franz returned to Ohio and continued practicing there, where he was an assistant professor of surgery at the Northeastern Ohio School of Medicine from 2003 to 2005. He also served as the director of vascular surgery education from 2004 to 2005. In 2005, he was recruited to be chief of vascular and endovascular surgery for Ohio Health/Grant Medical Center in Columbus where he was also a professor of surgery and then an associate professor of surgery at the Ohio University School of Medicine.

In good standing with a number of professional organizations, he is the Chairman of the International College of Angiology, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Venous Forum, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the Society of Vascular Surgery, and the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society.

One of the leading experts in his field, Dr. Franz is board-certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty in which diseases of the vascular system, including the arteries, veins, and lymphatic circulation, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. A vascular surgeon diagnoses, treats, and manages conditions in the arteries and veins, also called the blood vessels. These specialists treat a range of health problems, from spider and varicose veins to life-threatening aneurysms, and can help patients manage chronic conditions throughout their lives.

In honor of his clinical expertise, Dr. Franz is the recipient of Top 10 Doctor - State (2014) and On-Time Doctor Award (2015, 2016).

On a more personal note, he and his wife, Dawn, a former school principal, have two sons, Evan and Austin.
