Get to know Cardiac Electrophysiologist Dr. B. John Hynes, who serves patients in Salem, Virginia.

A board-certified cardiac electrophysiologist, Dr. Hynes is affiliated with LewisGale Physicians - Electrophysiology in Salem, Virginia. He has more than 20 years of specialized focus that includes supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, palpitations, implantable devices, and cardiac resynchronization therapy.

The experienced cardiac and electrophysiology specialists at LewisGale Physicians perform special tests to look for electrical activity in the patient’s heart. This allows them to locate heart arrhythmias and other abnormalities.

A graduate of the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, Dr. Hynes completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He then went on to complete two fellowships, one in cardiology and one in electrophysiology with Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine Hershey Medical Center. Prior to his medical studies, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Texas Arlington.

Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in cardiovascular disease, cardiac electrophysiology, and internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Moreover, he is certified as a clinical cardiac device specialist by the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners. His extensive research in the field of cardiology has been published in the American Journal of Cardiology, Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology, and Current Treatments in Cardiovascular Medicine.

Clinical cardiac electrophysiology (also referred to as cardiac electrophysiology, arrhythmia services, or electrophysiology), is a branch of the medical specialty of cardiology and is concerned with the study and treatment of rhythm disorders of the heart. An electrophysiologist is a type of cardiologist. They focus on the heart’s timing, or electrical system, and on diagnosing and treating irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias. They are also qualified to perform special tests of the heart’s electrical system, such as an electrophysiology study or an ablation.

When he is not seeing patients, Dr. Hynes enjoys spending time with his family and taking long bike rides.
